    I need a vapor canister for my '01 Pre-Runner (3.4L V6). OEM prices are $600-$750.
I keep seeing various after-market parts for considerable less. A mechanic friend says aftermarket is ok but to STAY AWAY from anything made in China. Can anyone suggest a good aftermarket option?

I found an OEM canister on eBay for around $300.

EDIT: $265, but that listing is no longer active.

Why do you need a new one? If it's leaking you can just epoxy up the seams around the bottom and save yourself some money.

I agree, cracks can be sealed. It's worth a try. Mine had bad VSVs, and Toyota doesn't sell them separately. Don't know if aftermarket VSVs are available for the canister.

If a valve was needed, I would cross reference the part #, Toyota tends to use these kinds of parts on many models. (around same year)

I would bet you could find something to work from a junkyard.

Thanks guys. I've ordered a length of hose and a new gas cap off eBay trying to fix on the cheap. If that doesn't solve the codes I will remove the canister, check for cracks & epoxy any I find. FYI, mine is the one under then hood, not the one under the truck bed (77740-04010).

I believe you can pressurize it to a couple of pounds, open the valve with a 9V battery and soap it for leaks.

talk to the Gunny at Camelback Toyota,i got one there for a 1st GEN was the best priced OEM I could find(and I looked hard for the best price), there are aftermarket varieties available but I wouldn't trust the quality for an OEM that costs a few dollars more especially if you plan on keeping the truck forever.

bought mine from carquest/advance auto parts when I was working there. they get it from an exclusive company called worldpac. worldpac gets a lot of OE products for less than dealer prices. this one was around 240 total at employee price which isn't much cheaper than walk in or shop price.

The 9v battery works good to test the valves. That's how I found my bad ones. Just use jumpers to connect the battery to the terminals on the valve. They will either click open or closed, depending on the specific valve. No click, no good. Since that solved my problem, I didn't look for leaks.

Shop told me it was the VSV so I pulled it off, ordered the same part & replaced it. Also pulled the intake off & ran seafoam thru the throttle body and cleaned it really well. The CEL stayed off almost 300 miles then came back on.

The 77740-04010 is, apparently, the canister that is mounted near the gas tank. The one under the hood is 77740-35470. Thanks for the input. I'm gonna try replacing the hoses & sealing any cracks I find. Will let you know what I find.

One interesting thing: I have a pdf showing parts for an 01 Taco. The "canister" in the drawing of the components under the hood is actually the one that mounts near the tank.

Good choice to replace it, NotDr.Phil, that's what I did too. No sense in applying a seal that's just going to fail at an inopportune time a few months down the road. I got a Denso replacement and it wasn't cheap, but it's one less thing to worry about for the remaining life of the truck.
