Another question to stir it up.. Honestly these are all questions I have to ask myself but I enjoy hearing what other people have to say.

I will be ordering my 16' tacoma sometime this week.

However I still haven't decided if the TRD sport is worth the extra change. I am on the fence between a SR5 w/ (sr5 appearance package) or going with the TRD sport. How did one choose? Essentially they are just aesthetic differences besides the 12volt outlet in the bed, correct?

The interior color options are different between the sr5 and the sport also.

I drove the sr5 first because that was the only truck that the dealer had in stock. After I finished driving it the dealer had a TRD sport with the tech package being unloaded. After seeing the finish of the sport I knew that I wouldn't be happy knowing that for few thousand more I'd be getting so much more especially when we're talking spending 32k or 36k and having the truck loaded. Just my takeaway but good luck in your decision

Personally, I can't live without RCTA and BSM. And Yes, I'm spoiled, but totally worthy option.

I would really think it depends on how/if you want to modify it. If you plan on throwing suspension on it, why pay for the TRD? All other parts can be swapped out. We have a 2012 base model that I have upgraded as we go along. Easier on the wallet in my opinion.

I'm my opinion the sport is worth it. Like others have said, it's about 4k difference in price. I think you get a lot for all of that. The entune audio and navigation did It for me. Don't forget the push button start. I never have to even take the key out of my pocket ever. It auto unlocks and you just get in and push the button.

I started out with wanting the SR5 with the appearance package, but after seeing a TRD Sport up close, it was worth it to me. I really liked both the interior/exterior appearance and I was coming from driving a BMW 328i. I love being able to keep the key in my pocket and just touch the handle to unlock the door.

Locally all our dealers keep the Sport and Offraod only in stock.

Heck I saw an AccessCab yesterday 2016 tacoma, with sticker of $41,000!!!!

If you want a SR base model or even SR5 we essentially have to look at out of state. All the 25K, SR 4 door double cab seem to be in FL, OR, WA, and some southern states (per my auto trader search)

What's the price difference? I have a '16 TRD Sport 4x4, but to be honest in hindsight wouldn't have minded saving a few bucks by going with the SR5 4x4. I really do like the look of the hood scoop though, but it wasn't something I just had to have. I bought my truck back in October when I was back in Colorado for a month between work contracts in Northern California, and sort of bought the truck on impulse and didn't want to wait. Don't get me wrong, the sport is nice, but if I had more patience and had to do it again I'd probably go with the SR5 and use the money I saved to put toward some stuff like new tires (which I did on my Sport), nicer wheels, Clazzio leather seat covers (which I also did on my Sport) a camper shell and Yakima roof rack.

I know I probably sound like a broken record since I've said this a few times before, but I think a lot of buyers get all caught up in the moment and think that if they want a 'capable off-road' truck it absolutely HAS to be the OR. I think for 99% of us the SR5 4x4 is more truck than most of us really need but won't admit it. And for the record the only think that 12v outlet is good for is powering a blender for margaritas, but there are other ways to make that work when you're out there camping, etc. Is it worth he uncharge? That's the question you'll have to answer for yourself. The push button start and unlocking the truck without the key really is a nice feature though. LED DRL's I could care less about. I never notice them or see them from the driver's seat. Some have complained that the Sport hood kicks off some nasty glare in the sun. My truck came with the hood decal and I have never had any glare issues.
