I wouldn't buy a rental car or truck, especially if price is close to single owner private values. Rentals generally have no service records, since they are maintained inhouse .
Some cars like Mustang GT's, Camaro SS, Hemi Challenger's and Hertz Corvette's especially avoid. Most have been rode hard, not that I know from experience.

.. depends how you want to view it. my brother in law is also in a similar position as your son in law.

rentals are kept up maintenance wise and repairs are done with oem parts.

they cant afford losing money to keep a car broken down, so they actually fork over for proper maintenance.

Rented TRD 4wd OR Tacomas for a week a couple of times last summer from Hertz out of Spokane & Boulder. They were exceptional ride's for rentacars for backwoods cruising in the mountains. I would go for one at those prices. They should still have some warrantee.

I rented a truck once where within a few miles after leaving the car rental place, the oil change light came on. I then took it on a 3k mile road trip.

You think they are good prices?
As someone posted earlier, 2 are 2WDs and the white 4WD at $35,000 is right at what a new one can be purchased for.

I wonder how much experience some of you who think these are a good deal actually have with rental cars.
I rented cars all over the country almost daily when I worked as a construction manager for a large retail chain.
I know what a pile of crap most are.

I used to work at a rental place. We would get rid of vehicles around 50k miles. The policy for returns was to wash the vehicle and check fluids. Oil was topped off if it was low but never changed.

While I agree that rental cars shouldn’t be a first choice, my sister bought a rental car, and she has put 120k on it, and hasn’t had to do anything other than brakes, tires, battery, and fluids. I am fairly impressed with it.

I think it depends on the car and the agency who owned/rented it. Eight years ago I bought a two-year old Toyota Corolla for a friend. It had just come from Hertz, had new tires and came with service records; most of them were done by various Toyota dealers in the state where I live. It had some cosmetic scratches from frequent use of the trunk and back seat but other than that looked like it had led an easy life.

A year or so later the friendship ended and I ended-up with the car. I drove it for two years and never had to anything but basic maintenance (I put a battery in it and cursed the oil filter the three times I had to change it). Easily the most boring car I've ever owned but I traveled all over the southwest in it (I loved the gas mileage that thing got). I eventually sold it to a Buddy who still drives it daily, no issues.

My theory is that boring rental cars don't normally get flogged. Pick-up trucks, I might be concerned about. We rent those frequently at work and I see how all of us treat those (loading heavy spools of wire, bed scratches, idling all day or night etc.) At work we rent from Enterprise, the longest rental I had was two months in a Nissan Frontier. At one point the oil change light came on, I called the store where I'd rented it and they had me take it to Firestone for an oil change. They gave me the option to just wait and have them do it when I turned-in the truck but I opted to have it done (see above about frequent heavy loading and long idle times). It took 30 minutes.

All that having been said I wouldn't feel comfortable buying a used rental car from a smaller Ma and Pop company.

Cat shields by CaliRaised. Husky liners, window tint, heated seat (passenger only.) Relentless bed rail brackets with QuickFists (shovel/axe/fire extinguisher.) Hondo Garage Un-holey vent mount. Anytime rear with front facing camera. Billet front seat risers. Viair 88p. 265/75r16 Goodyear Ultra-terrain tires.
Generally I agree with you BUT... but it all depends on how big a deal you can get and is it worth the potential of items needing repair in the future.

I bought a 2002 Xterra 4x4 with 13k miles that had been a new rental car back in late 2002 and I still have it. 165k miles on the clock with no major repairs.

You’d be surprised that a shit ton of used cars on the dealer lot are former rentals.

Considering options, those don't even look like deals, I'd buy new.

Or fleet. I went to many car auctions that were government owned machines, running from 3 years old to much older. There were also some vehicles seized from such things as drug dealers.

Unless you personally know the seller of a vehicle (and they bought it new), or someone turns over a sheaf of legit maintenance documents, there isn't diddly in risk difference between a rental and any other equivelant used vehicle at the plebian level.

    Specialty/performance vehicles? Different story.

I'd wager 90% of off rental vehicles would pass an OE CPO exam with under $200 of work. And lots of folks, even around here, buy in to the 'value' of CPO, when the actual value is to the dealer who collects a higher price.

Your better off buying and selling their stock... its a fucking roller coaster right now, it'll be $1.50, then the next day $5.00 then tank to $2.00

I drive rental cars/trucks the same way I drive my own truck - gun them at traffic lights and hammer at redline :notsure: Nothing I do on pavement compares to the abuse on even moderate trails. So it's less risky to buy a former rental than a one-owner Taco that's been off road.

I bought 1,000 at $1 and sold 3 days later at $3.40. On a whim, not a value proposition.

Right now I'd not touch it again. However if Avis (CAR) dips again that could be a good buy, as they will likely benefit from the Hertz flogging when travel returns.
