I have a 1999 Toyota Tacoma and for the past couple months, the truck will occassionally hesitate for approximately 1 second when I turn the key before the engine turns over... but 9 out of 10 times it fires right up. In the past 2 weeks this delay has happened more frequently and a few times it wouldn't crank at all. After push starting it (manual transmission), it would start fine the next time. It's a very intermittent problem with no pattern as to when it happens, just that it is happening more frequently. I've had the battery and starter checked and both are good. My check engine light is on, (has been for a while), but the code is for EVAP system. Any ideas?

I have noticed that Sometimes with a manual the starter will freeze up and if you roll the truck backward or forward a few inches it will start right up. I have seen this issue with many different vehicles but mostly trucks. It has to do with the way the starter gear lines up with flywheel. As both wear they sometimes mis align. Other possibilities are the starter relay or loose wires. I cant really see the evap system causing the starter not to work.

What you are describing sounds like a broken tooth or teeth on a flywheel. I had a 71 El Camino 350ci that had that problem, a little rocking of the truck and the starter would engage.

ya similar. First thing I would do next time it wont start is roll it a couple feet and crank it again. if it starts you know it is nothing else.

If it were the flywheel it wouldn't be a hesitation, it would be a partial to complete miss of mating up with the flywheel with the addition of the sound of the starter spooling up and most likely a grinding noise.

Chances are you're solenoid on your starter is starting to stick or you have a corroded contact which your solenoid assists in making.

Hmm, I have often just got a click and nothing. There can be many different symptoms but I am convienced it is your starter not your evap causing the issue at hand
