    A quick preamble.
I've lurked on TW for while now, gleaning as many nuggets of Tacoma (and general mechanical) wisdom as possible, so thanks to all who contribute, you've saved me a lot of money...and headaches. I spend more time on maintenance, than mods, but will try to contribute what I can when I come across something I haven't found covered already.
    With that said,
I ran into this today while checking out the manual shifter seat in my 09. It looks like something took bite of the collar surrounding the seat. It struck me as odd given the condition of the seat, and bushing didn't look all that bad. I was curious if anybody in TW had run into this before.

I'm not sure what you are looking at. A "bite"?

    Thanks for looking.
Towards the center of the "scuff line" just above the blue seat, it appears a chunk, or chip is missing.

It looks like a round hole, but it is kinda hard to see clearly.

    in the shadow?

It's more a hole than a 'rash' right? Looks like it belongs. I dunno.

I suppose it might be hole, or indentation originally in the part, that became a bit mishapped from tens of thousands of miles of occasional rubbing. It's definitely not perfect round anymore. Sorry for the shady pics. Seems an odd place for an indentation though.

    It does.

    Wonder if it's a detent?

Can you confirm whether or not it's a thru port or just an indentation that stops a little bit below the ID surface?

I've been too tied up with with a bathroom remodel to open it back up to look. I'll confirm, and update this with better pics as soon as I can find a few minutes.

    Is your shifter operating poorly?

If it is not then I would not worry about it, as it is possible it is a detent.

You have to inspect the shifter assemvly you pulled off and check to see what it looks like. If it has a notch coming out of it, that slot is indeed a detent and you have nothing to worry about.

Imperfection in the casting is my vote. Probably always there.

I checked the shifter assembly, and bushing when I pulled it. It was all in better shape than expected, that's what left me scratching my head in the fist place. The shifting is getting a bit tough going into second and reverse, but it's probably just my clutch showing its age. I'm not too worried about the marks, it was just something I hadn't seen before so I figured I'd post it up to see if anyone had.

Hard to see in the shadow again.
