Hey Connecticut, our everything hurts

Alternator story made me think of this: So yesterday my wife calls me from the grocery store to tell me that her 2019 Odyssey barely cranked. Not surprised, OEM Honda batteries are known for being short lived. Grab my jumper pack, drive the three miles, jump it and and send her home in my truck.

Didn't feel like changing myself so drive to a friend's auto repair shop. Tech pulls it in, yanks old battery and calls me over. Neither of us had ever seen a battery box with a cooling fan, small one similar to a computer fan.

Is this battery fan a new thing in vehicles?

 

You mean (I presume) it's part of the actual battery, or something it drops into in the vehicle?

 

I am itching for a mod/maintenance day myself....

 

I broke down. Been futzing with the prius hoping to nurse it to warmer weather to figure out what's going on. Getting sick of futzing in the cold. Warning lights came on as I was heading past the local dealer. Stopped in, they were slow, they took the car. Corroded wires & a clogged hybrid cooling fan.
$500 to cut off the ends, splice things back together, probably pulled some dog fur out of the fan. Shameless.
But they did fix it. Did better by me than they've done by @Cativelense

There's a fan in the battery case/tray for ventilation of the battery. I'm guessing it's either on a thermostat or controlled by the ECU based on engine parameters or under hood temp.

 

Is it a special type of battery? It's not lithium, is it?

 

Nice that you got it fixed and you no longer have to wonder what's doing it. I was thinking water damage/corrosion as I've seen that on multiple vehicles. That or rodent damage.

 

I'm going to need a mod/maintenance week.

I just watched this for WAY to long, it's hypnotic.

And agree with you Bill on unions. Grew up in a UAW house as did most of my family and friends.

 

Could tell when i checked traffic for the 30 commute, and there was literally no one on the road saying 12 minutes lol.

 

My company's warehouse opened up this morning as usual, but just got an email saying they were closing at 10.

Guess everyone is expecting it to be pretty bad.

Temps falling now, roads may be sporty.

 

Salted/treated roads are fine so far in western CT. Hope they stay that way.
