Question, fellow Nutmeggers.

So I have these bees all over my front yard. They're not yellow jackets, and I've been told they're not honey bees either. But for the past couple of years they "come back". Come back as in, they live in the ground so once spring comes around they come out of their holes and are all over the place.

They don't stink because when I mow my lawn I go over where they have their holes, and they just keep flying around not doing anything.

I don't want to kill them, nor do I want to kill my grass in the process of trying to get rid of them.

Anyone know what I'm talking about and has any suggestions?!

 

I get ground hornet nests from time to time.
Shop vac, most will probably die.

 

These don't look like hornets or yellow jackets though... they look like a "regular" bee.

They're just annoying because my youngest is afraid of going outside in the front where they are because they're flying around everywhere.

 

Like honey bee or bumblebee? I’m stumped either way. I have carpenter bees trying to eat my shed… ready to burn it down.

I just want to get rid of them somehow without killing them, and my grass.

 

Try sprinkling a fair amount of cinnamon around the nest entrance for a week or so. They don't like the strong aroma. You can also try some vinegar

 

LOL... you said "nest".

My front yard looks like a damn battle scene with tons of "bomb drop holes".

There's holes everywhere for these things...they're everywhere.

But I'll give that a try for sure. Sprinkle some cinnamon around the area that the holes are in and see what happens.

I had a similar bee issue last summer and had to call a bee specialist to have them humanely evacuated from my front yard. They were digging and presumably living in holes along the walkway to the front door, doesn't sound dissimilar to what you have.

I believe they are just called ground bees....they tunnel and burrow similar to a ground hog etc. they can sting but typically won't until disturbed, at least that's been my experience.

They are probably either all black or mostly black. Similar in size to a honey bee.

As for getting rid of them, you've got me. When I found them at my previous house they were under ground I was landscaping so I literally uprooted them. If you don't want to kill them by plugging a few hole and unloading a can or two of bee killer in them then idk what the solution is ... clearly you're not going to uproot your lawn, that'd be ridiculous

 

LOL. Yeah... I like landscaping, but not that much to the point that I'd tear up my lawn just to get rid of them.

Going to try the cinnamon thing and see what happens. Then go from there.

 

You can also try a mixture of cayenne and cinnamon. I used to steep those with a few other things (dish soap, vinegar etc) and spray my plants with it. Keeps the aphids and beetles at bay.
