Morning all

 

Damn. Wish I knew. Didn’t check phone on Vaca. Just got home. Block was awesome as always. Had a great couple days biking and beaching. Plenty of eating.

 

Next year when I go have to remember this, go say hi meet some of you. Family has a boat that sits in the mooring field for almost two months.

Dropped the truck at new country Toyota in Westport this AM based on everyone’s recommendations. Also it was much more convenient for me on the way to work. Why haven’t I done this before? Check in was a decent process, everyone seems on their game, dissapointed they couldn’t get me a courtesy car for the day but the did drop me off at work.

Interim update at The Westport service center. Didn’t hear from anyone all day. So I called them at 4:15 to see what’s up. He wasn’t ready with info yet. Called me back at 5pm. (Mind you I am stranded at work in the mean time) they gave me a laundry list totaling $5100 including a new drive belt which if you recall was replaced a month ago after it blew off. The big ticket items are power steering issues which just developed a small leak very recently. They want to replace like the whole front end.

Asked them to send a shuttle car to get me. And they found a loaner taco for tomorrow, there were no loaners this AM. When I get back to the shop I’ll go over line by line and decide if we’re going to do it all or not.

 

Holy moly!!!! How the hell did that happen?!?

I told them there was about $1500 worth I didn’t want them to do but I don’t know anything about a leaking power steering rack or steering shaft assembly so I said go ahead on those... I did start leaking steering fluid yesterday...

 

Dang Steve. Hopefully that will be it then.

New England Auto World in Derby, anyone know of the place, or any feedback on it?

 

Some of that stuff of a complete rip off. The cabin filter, air filter, taillight bulbs, brake job. Prices of parts and labor is insane. I mean 20 bucks for a cabin filter and $45 labor to install it? That's just robbery. $21 labor to change air filter? $600 labor to change brake shoes and spark plugs? Absolutely insane man. Run away from that dealer

Very high in pricing... For example, Changing the AC air filter takes just a few minutes, just remove the glove box door (no tools needed). Look up the steering rack price online from one of the Toyota dealers for a comparison.

 

Yea I held them back on several of the things I thought were very basic. $770 for rear drums and shoes I can do for far less. And those lightbulbs are super damn easy to put in. I just did spark plugs myself too recently. So right now I’m looking around $3k just to get the steering shit and a couple others I wanted to avoid. Shit I hardly have time to mow the lawn lately I almost felt like having them do it all so it would be finished.

 

New here at Tacoma World and a bit naïve as to what is a normal price for service vs. what is inflated/ripoff.

My 2001 Tacoma Double Cab has 215,000 on it and needs a new timing belt and a minor tune-up and my local dealer (where I have bringing the truck for service -except for about a year-since picking it up there 17 years ago) is quoting $1,100 for a timing belt and $400 for a tune up. They also quoted me $400 for front brakes which I thought was quite steep.

I took the truck to a local independent garage when I was short on cash, but my experience was not good, so hence the reason for going to the dealer who I think/hope will keep my truck running to 300,000+.

So, my question is, are these quotes reasonable or are they inflated?

 

Welcome aboard Kayleigh! I am not much of a mechanically inclined person, but there are some folks on here that are, and can probably give you an idea/input. I'm sure they'll chime in and give you some input.

 

Yea I think 1000$ ballpark for timing belt is not unusual. Does that include anything else while they are in there? Last time I looked at it for another car the timing belt included the water pump which was in the same area for that price.

I think the dealers do inflate the cost but also give lots of extras like free loaner cars and shuttle rides etc.

What is included in a “tune up” ??that could be all kinds of stuff you could do yourself..

$400 for front brakes seems pretty reasonable. Last time I got the parts at napa it was $288 just for parts, so that’s only 1 hour of labor for them to install sounds about right.

 

Damn how many miles and was something going on to bring it there.
