    I know most of you out there are gonna laugh but after crawling around under my truck tonight I just realized the skid plate protecting my gas tank is plastic. WTF? Of all the things I want protected is my gas tank. I guess I never reached up and touched the dam thing and assumed it was metal.

    There could be something said for plastic diffusing the energy of the hit. Think of how strong carbon fibre can be.
    Metal would absorb the energy of the hit, deforming (potentially) in the process, staying deformed & possibly rubbing or penetrating the metal tank.

    Assuming the fuel tank is even metal....

    Surprisingly it does an ok job, but also is placed in a strategic spot.
    I wheel a lot on big rocks and as long as you take good lines and have a spotter you will be ok.
    There are other options though, but I understand not being metal....
    If you do slam a metal skid and puncture it the metal could possibly punch through the gas tank.
    Also if the metal skid gets bent to much it may need to be cut off and cutting so close to a gas tank would be extremely hazardous to your health I.E. kaboom!
