How many times have you seen someone go to the bathroom and not wash their hands...

Pretty funny that one of the main deterrents is to wash your hands and to practice standard hygiene... shouldn't you be doing that daily already

 

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and that’s fine to speak your feelings but please don’t compare the flu in prior years to an active pandemic. We are mere weeks into this situation and the numbers increase markedly on the daily basis. It’s not even close to fair to compare to influenza that’s gone through an entire season. We are dealing with a novel virus we have never seen before. We don’t know exactly where it came from, ways it spreads and the length of time it can spread for, etc. There is no treatment. There is no vaccine available. These two things are nothing alike. Thus far in the virus history kids have done well but young, healthy patients are being intubated (breathing tube down into airway) daily and that’s not a good sign. Oh so they spend a few weeks on a ventilator and get lucky enough to get off the ventilator and don’t die, so that’s one less in the death column that skews the numbers. 70+ year old patients with any health problems do horrendous. It’s the notion that “I won’t get sick or will barely have symptoms” that will kill millions. The economy is resilient, it will return. Grandma and grandpa can’t return back from death.

Listen to the experts. They’re well trained and experts in their field for a reason. Stay home. Social distance. Wash hands. Clean objects we touch often. If we can delay the spread, we have the best chance of the best possible outcome.

 

For real!!! It skeeves me the fuck out when I see people use the bathroom and just walk out. WTF!!! Especially at work... That's the worst! WOW

 

I've got to see if there's some 'after test' for Covid-19.
Upon reflection, I think I had it way back at the very beginning of it being 'found' in CT. A very mild brief interaction.
Would love to know I've already had it so I can wash my hands less - LOL. I wash my hands, but they don't like this much washing.

I agree that its a virulent and contagious virus but even Dr. Fauci who heads the COVID 19 Task Force agrees that there is no reason why this virus will behave differently than any other coronavirus (typically the common cold virus) in terms of post infection immunity, recovery, herd immunity, etc. We will likely have a vaccine by summer's end and maybe sooner. There are lots of clinical trials looking at anti-viral therapies as we speak.

I disagree that this virus will result in MILLIONS of seriously ill or fatalities. The numbers from China, South Korea and Italy do not suggest that. THOUSANDS, yes, but not MILLIONS like the 1918 Spanish flu "pandemic" where there were 50 million fatalities. Not even close. When thousands die in a country of 350 million people I question whether we should be calling it a pandemic at this stage.

Unfortunately, the media reports the rare cases where younger patients need to be intubated which is very rare by statistics. There have been two cases in the news where a 20 yo and 34 yo male died. However, one ended up having a new diagnosis of leukemia and the other had recently got off chemotherapy for testicular cancer (nasty form of cancer). Unfortunately they mentioned this at the bottom of the article well below the title, that many probably missed because they didn't finish the article.

My stance is that we need to take COVID 19 seriously but we need to battle this virus more strategically and not continue with current policies which will have severe economic consequences. When the unemployment jumps from 3% to 15%, people can't feed their families, they lose their houses, and crime jumps we will all see that the economic hardship will not be easily reversible. Again, when 98% of the population will not be severely effected from a health perspective from COVID 19, we need to keep things in perspective and come up policies that aim to protect/treat/quarantine the vulnerable populations but allow the younger healthier population to return to work and school which is ABSOLUTELY possible if we critically assess the situation. This article sheds some insight into these possibilities. We live in a society where debate should be encouraged, especially when we use FACTS to make critical decisions instead of speculation & uncertainty.

Interesting read from an Op-Ed. The biggest issue so far is we can’t really look at other countries and compare. China is a strong government who literally shut down the entire Provence of Wuhan and contained the virus quickly. South Korea has largely tested young healthy carriers and that skews numbers to favor them. Italy is unique as well since the population is skewed towards the elderly and they have a strong family presence with young children/teens/college aged traveling to see family for dinners/weekends/etc and that’s where the most danger lies. Carriers coming in contact with those at risk. How do we properly protect the elderly? It’s not an easy question to answer. We’ve seen the virus get into nursing homes (Washington State) and it’s devastating. We have a local soldiers home here that has new confirmed cases and I fear the worst for them. Who brought it in? Likely a young/healthy worker who had a “sniffle and cough” and thought nothing of it. We have driven this notion that we must work regardless of health to buy the new 1K apple iPhone and the new clothes/shoes/accessory and it’s dangerous. We don’t get or take sick days like we should. We don’t take regular vacations or staycations like we should. It’s those people that feel well or have minor symptoms that get us in trouble. You can’t quarantine just those at risk so the notion to quarantine all takes effect. The major issue is we aren’t like other nations, we can’t just completely shut down. Look around the forum alone and you’ll find tons of people saying “F*** the government, they ain’t telling me what to do”. Sad reality is there is no good answer. I would doubt a vaccine can pass clinical trial and get approval in a few short months. Most take around a year. That being said, look at the number of people who forgo the influenza vaccine on a yearly basis, it’s mind boggling. “Well I don’t get the flu or if I do I just get minor symptoms so I’m not getting the vaccine” THEY ARE THE VECTORS. Herd immunity is a dangerous theory to operate under. We have seen small outbreaks of Measles, Mumps, etc in the anti-vax groups. Preventable disease killing is unbelievable. And I’ve seen the clinical trials for treatments but nothing so far is cutting edge and promising. Right now we just hope it’s stays as minor symptoms and if it’s worse, hope you do well on a vent and then can come off. Hopefully they find an anti-viral that works well. The interviews from the ICU in Italy are daunting and we hope to not experience the same.

 

I think everyone makes good and valid points.

Hopefully this shit will blow over soon, and we can start going back to normal.

Isn't it supposed to be warming up now, or starting to at least?

It's cold A.F. outside, and gloomy too. No bueno.

 

I'm at work and overseeing a large machine delivery. Multiple sections that are overweight loads and we have a giant door open to allow the crane to bring them in. It was warmer earlier in the month. Actually had to shut the lift down when it snowed on Monday.

 

Looks like everything is going crazy lately then.

 

I am ready for Spring... Done with Snow for the year!
