Day off today. Have to go to work and de-clutter my desk, for the possible re-opening plan. All they want on the desk is what you need to work, so it's easier for the cleaning crew to deep clean regularly.

Went to auto zone, explained the issue to the guy, and he suggested this.

Guess I'll give it a try and see what happens.

 

Nuno - Not sure those kits help with peeling. I thought they were more for cleaning up hazed lenses. Never used those kits myself though so I really don't know. I've been using a UV protectant spray on my aftermarket lenses since new to protect against yellowing and peeling. Use it every 3 months or so. So once you have them cleaned up and looking good again, I'd recommend a UV protectant spray to keep them that way.

 

Yeah, definitely gonna start spraying it with something once I get it all cleaned up. Hoping the stuff the guy suggested works on getting the rest of the "film" that's still on there come off.

 

Got the new harness, swapped it out, fiddled around with all of the wires, and now only half of the halo lights up on the driver's side, as opposed to none before. When the DRL are on, the entire halo lights up amber. But when the headlights are on, only half of it lights up white like the headlight.

No clue what's wrong. Pretty fucking pissed off.

Could it be that the halo is fucked up then?

EDIT: fiddled around with the wires to make sure that everything was connected properly. Not to mess up.

 

Yep... I think the white LED halo/switchback is fucked up. Amber one is fine, but not the white for when the headlights are on.

Guess it's time to look into new retros, and maybe something without the stupid LED switchback/halo, just a regular shroud for the headlight itself. Something still blacked out though. And maybe I can sell the ones I have on there now and be able to "make some money back", as long as I don't fuck anything up while removing it.

 

Option: There may be a separate wire for the white halos. Disconnect it on the side that works. Or, change the yellow halos to be on with the headlights instead of the DRLs.

 

I messed around with that while I was fiddling around in there, and didn't really like the look sort of speak. It just looks weird without the white halo on because of the type of shroud it has.

 

I see what you're saying about the orange now... DUH!

Might have to look into that.

I think it worked. And it'll do for as long as they last from here on out. Major difference is that when I turn the blinker on, the halo/switchback will not go from white to amber and blink; it'll stay solid amber. The DRL/blinker will blink as normal.

I also used the stuff that I bought at autozone today, to hopefully "fix" the peeling look on the headlights. Just finished doing that (the two steps), so now we'll see how it looks in the AM. Says it has to cure for 24 hours to seal the lens, so...

Fingers crossed that I "fixed" what needed to be fixed.

 

I did the lenses on Linda's old Rav4 and it helped for a few months, hers were all glazed over but not the peeling you mentioned. I ended up using my DA and some compound on them which did a great job but IDK how long that lasted since we sold the vehicle shortly after.

 

If this works, guess we'll see how long it'll last. LOL

 

Keep me posted, I'll see what the stuff was I used..I have a Porter Cable DA. The kit you got did help for a bit..bear in mind the lenses were 13 years old at that point.

 

By that point (13 year old lenses), the truck should belong to my oldest (if all goes according to plan), so I won't really give a fuck. LOL
