I've never seen or been a part of a real recovery, and I'm really excited. I'm basically brand new to this and I have been giddy about this trip for like 2 weeks

I'm very unfamiliar with stuff like this... Replacing parts I'm ok with, but I've never done like, actual modifying. I've literally never drilled through metal. I was just holding a 3/8" bit against my frame...

 

I defer to someone who has done sliders, but I think you need to use step bits?

 

Crap I'm sorry I didn't pick up on this before.
It's way easier if you make a starting hole with half the size of the 3/8".
It cuts less metal so you can chew threw it faster.
Actually the more sizes you use the easier it is and saves your bits too.
I'm very familiar with metal work, still suck at welding though.

At this point, technically I've done sliders! I considered step bits but only had shitty Harbor Freight ones.

Dude don't apologize! You've already taught me a ton. I learned through this, and now I know for next time

I also learned to not drill metal on my back in a sleeveless shirt and no eye protection...

 

Step bits are good too maybe better for him on account small bits break easy if you're pushing to hard or crooked.

You also need a cutting lubricant and back off on the pressure occasionally to let the bit and substrate cool.

But I really don't use oil like I should because I'm normally using junk drill bits that I keep sharpening by hand.
Well, with a grinding wheel anyway.

 

I originally used a little WD40 to keep it cool, but when I was drilling straight up I just kept taking breaks. I figured it would all just drip onto me and not stay on the bit/in the hole. Definitely learned a lot from this though

 

If you end up having a hard time getting bolts or would just like new ones look at Fastenal. You can only order in their store if you have an account with them or to $25 minimum, same on the website. I used them to get some of the automotive bolts that I needed for a project here at the house.
