Ok I drove by my dealer the other day and i saw a 2008 TRD Off-Road for 26K with 35,753 on the clock. I currently have a 2009 TRD Sport with the SR5 package with 45,500. I and still owe 25K on it. I have always wanted the off road model but they are really hard to come by where i live so i settled with my sport. You guys think it will be worth trading in my ride for it? How much do you guys think I could potentially lose on my truck? Or do you think I have a good chance negotiating a good trade, (any advice would help). I was thinking about going to check it out on Saturday when I'm off. What do you guys think?

You would most likely end up backwards on the deal. I would not do it.

    ^^ This.

You gotta at least wait till you get a good chunk of positive equity in your truck.

You're already really upside down on your '09.

I wouldn't do it either. One point that is important in my estimation is not all Tacoma's are created equal. What I mean by that is all of our trucks have little quirks to them. Example: some Taco's have driveline vibrations in stock form right off the bat, others don't. Just how it goes sometimes...

If you have a truck that runs well and you enjoy driving it then I would keep it. There is no guarantee that this new Taco will perform up to the level of what you have now.

With that said, if you are buying it for reasons like having a locker would help you off roading then it might be worth it. But you didn't state anything like that in the original post so I couldn't comment more specifically.

Edit: Thought you had a TRD Sport 4x4. Wanting the Off Road makes more sense now... Best of luck with your decision!

I'd say give it a shot. It may end up costing you some cash, but you won't know how much till they give you the numbers. You get lower mile and the package you want. Downside is you are going back a year and probably get screwed a bit on the valuations.

How much is it worth to you?

I have been off roading in my truck but I haven't done as much as I would like since it is not a 4x4. I love my truck and runs great but I kick myself everyday for not waiting for an off road model to come by my way. I do suppose this is more of a want then need, Off roading is something I love doing and want to get into it a lot more then I am now. I guess I'm just gonna have to go in and see what kind of deal I can get, if I'm way backwards on the deal Ill just have to wait till I have more of my truck paid off. But the way I'm looking at it is I'm going to be spending the cash anyway might as well try and get what I want while I have the chance.

I don't think there is a huge demand in the market for 2 wheel drive off road trucks...

Sometimes you just gotta take the hit. You made a mistake buying the 2 wheel drive truck instead of waiting to get what you really wanted. I made the mistake of buying a jeep patriot once, and losing 8 grand trading it in 2 years later for a Tacoma. The point is, you made a mistake, now suck it up, spend some money, and get what you want this time!

I know I'll be upside down on the deal just trying to figure about how much. If its worth it I will most likely do it, but I don't want to be giving away my truck. Hopefully there sales are down this month and are willing to deal with me.

It doesn't make any sense to make this deal.. the 09' has a few things that the 08' wont, such as your backup camera and mirror, smoked headlight shrouds, led tails, plus a few other changes. And besides you instantly loose value by going down a model year.

Trading for the 08' would cost way more than it would to just add a locker and make other changes to make yours and OR model...

You will lose all your color matched parts (mirrors, door handles, bumper, grill, and hood skoop) that's worth quite a bit already.

You can surely trade coils with someone to get the progressive coils from the OR, but your ride will only be more stiff so that wouldn't make sense.

You can surely trade rims to get the OR rims if you want them. Plus make money since sport rims worth more.

You can probably trade all your color matched parts plus cash for the chrome stuff and make a decent amount of money.

A rear locker will cost you no more than $1000-2000 depending brand and install. You will loose more than that in your trade so why not just spend your loses on adding a locker instead of losing all that other stuff. With the money you can make from selling you color matched parts and skewp, plus sell your camera, trade coils, you could easily but a locker lose $0 in the process.

Essentially your going to pay thousands in your lose to gain a locker and coils, and basically down grade everything else and lose features. Its a major step back. Would cost day less to upgrade the 09' sport to to have a locker. It would be a pretty stupid financial decision to make that trade.

(Unless the 08' is 4x4 and your 09' is 2wd then its a whole other story)
