a good friend who has a mechanic shop in town and is very good mechanic, he even builds track cars and racing atv's for people, anyways we were shootin the breeze drinking a few beers on the porch and he asked how many miles i had on my truck. i have almost 140,000 miles on it, he asked me when is the last time i inspected/adjusted the valves? he knows i used to be in sales and most of the miles were at interstate speeds and these trucks do run a little high in rpms at highway speeds. honestly i never have. he said on these motors its a good idea to do so at least ever 100,000 miles. mine has the 'Toyota Tick' but as far as i can remember it always has since bought new in 2006.

NO he is not looking to sell me a valve job, all my maintenance and repairs he does for me after hours if i help him at the shop to do the job and pay for any parts... (and the beer) :)

my question is, what do you guys think, do i really need to do it? i never really thought about it before until he brought it up, i just want to be sure i do not go too long and something happen to damage the heads.

has anyone with about the same amount of miles done an inspection and turned out an adjustment was needed, or found any other problems?

thanks guys, have a good rest of the weekend :)

I have owned and driven Toyotas since my first a 1966 Toyota Corona.

I have run hundreds of thousands of miles and never had to touch a valve. If you can get a good price from your buddy it doesn't hurt to check it. I'm of the frame of mind, that if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

i am of the same thought, 'if it aint broke...' but i am big into maintenance too, just wanted to check with you guys to see if anyone has found that in fact adjustment was needed when they did inspection. i admit he is one of those people who is even more overboard than me on maintenance, but i always consider his advice as being pretty solid.

as far as price he never charges me any labor or anything, we have taken this truck apart over at the shop probably 100 times over the years messing with lifts and mods, etc, but it goes both ways, like early this morning we were at his dads adding on to the barn :) guess thats what friends are for, lol

i guess i will leave it alone for now, like i said just wanted to ask you guys opinion, thanks for the input :)

Yes there is. You adjust the valve Lash in a V6 4.0L by measuring the clearances and replacing the buckets with the proper thickness if needed.

    Usually not needed.
