Hey everyone. I'm new to TW. Have kinda known about Tacoma World through an old Insurance agent. Glad to be here.
So, I have a 2001 Tacoma 4x4 3.4L. Stick shift. It's my 3rd Toyota. Love those trucks. Anyway. Been having trouble for about the last year with a sensor. I think. It's starting to nickel and dime me. Already replaced both Cats. Then the upstream o2 sensor.
Finally got the check engine light to stay off. But then right after that had a problem with it cutting out while driving. So, we're going to change the master airflow sensor. It was parked for about two weeks. Then I started driving it again for the past three weeks. Driving fine, till today. The check engine light came back shortly after the worst rattling I've ever heard it make. So I had the code checked. Came back as Bank 1 Cat.
Anyone have any helpful information on this type of thing? Be much appreciated. Thanks!

Could you elaborate a bit more on the "rattling"? are we talking about a rattle like a belt slapping? or maybe the sensor came loose and is rattling while on the cat still?

I don't think it's a Belt. From inside it sounds like it's just on the other side of the firewall. It's Rattled before, but never this bad.

We're you accelerating when you heard the rattling? Was it coming com the engine bay? If so maybe it's a bad case of pinging/pre detonation? When my truck was throwing a lean code (po171) it pinged/rattled pretty bad under throttle

kinda sounds like a burnt valve. do some compression checks. plus get a scanner so you can monitor fuel trims.

Eon_blue actually, yes, I was accelerating. And yes it was coming from the engine bay.

Shortly after the rattling it threw the check engine light. I took it to an auto part's store and the code came back as Bank 1 Cat.

Remember checking any code entails the complete circuit from the sensor to the ECM .

Burnt or damaged wires get missed quite often

    Exhaust leak bolts came loose
