Pro tip: 440A and 440B are shit. 440C is hopefully what you have, as it's the only one that isn't complete junk. Soft steel, sharpens easy, dulls quick, not something I would abuse.

IMO.. when they're stamped the way yours is they're usually 440A.

440C will almost always be stamped as such.

Is 440a harder? I want to carry it daily as my back up the size is perfect

No.. 440A is like any $2 flea market knife from Frost Cutlery.

If it were me, I wouldn't use it. I'd rather have an interesting knife than an interesting knife that's broken.

Being something you got from your grandfather I would rather keep it in a drawer than use it. I am not very sentimental, but if you lose that knife the sentimental value might be more than any replacement value. There are many $20 knifes at Walmart that will serve you well as a backup carry knife.

Most of my knives are gifts from him lol my back up is always a clipless folder that stays in my back pocket for when I need a light duty knife. I've been carrying a case or my sod buster

Thanks to this forum I bought a Kershaw brawler 1990, loved it, went to a tailgate :drunk: and lost it...
I bought another kershaw Kuro after comparing it and a crkt m16 the local store had.. and I realized how much I love the assisted opening
    [IMG]
I cut plastic straps and cardboard for work and was just wandering what y'all would recommend? I have found the serrated blade helps rip off the straps, the flowery handle on the Kuro isn't growing on me and I'm thinking I'm going to return it...

For those uses (I know it isn't fun..) I'd just stick with a box knife.

The blade steel on those knives, I assume, is probably an 8CR13MOV or similar - which isn't particularly durable. Sharpens easy, but dulls quick. Serrations have to be sharpened as well and those plastic straps are pretty tough on cheaper knives.

    Just my .02.

Thats what we manly use out on the floor but when I'm back in the cooler I find my self with just my everyday carry a lot. I honestly try to avoid using my knife because nothing dulls them like cardboard :(

With the leather lanyard? That's a boker plus "gentleman" it's my weekend carry. I'd never take it to work but it's great for when your dressing up a little or you know you won't really be using it. Definitley a gentlemans knife hence the name lol
