I keep flip flopping on buying an Esee 3

someone sell me on it, or something in the same use and price realm

I had one and literally gave it away.

    I absolutely hated it.

FWIW, my buddy who received it from me loves it.

I probably should have got the ESEE4 but hey.. my bad. Now I'm far too turned off to take the ESEE risk again - nobody sells them locally so it's an Internet purchase roll of the dice.

My Fällkniven F1 is similar in size and is a greater knife in many aspects.

What did you hate about the Esee and what makes the F1 so much better

ESEE warranty is good, but the price they want(ed?) for the 3 and the knife I received was crazy. Carbon steel with a coating and micarta handles? The blade stock was too thin IMO.

I received it in the mail and shipped it to my buddy 2 days later.

Just seemed like a poor value blade with a good warranty. Did not feel strong in my hand, did not have confidence in the blade.

The F1 is high quality laminated stainless steel with a great handle. The sheath is meh aesthetically but it's designed for work and it does that great. It's perfect if not ugly and cheap looking. It's not a cheap sheath, but it's certainly a bit ugly.

I have a leather sheath and a kydex and it generally rides in the kydex sheath.

Stout knife. Maybe the most confidence inspiring knife that I've ever handled.

Convex grind takes a keen edge and holds it, I don't sharpen it, haven't in years. A few swipes on a strop after use and the edge is restored and ready for work.

Only thing I've ever not loved about it was using it to cut food at my camp kitchen. Thick blade and convex grind make it a less than ideal slicer.

The ESEE3 would likely be a decent slicer though, I'd probably give it a convex treatment also.

I replaced my ESEE3 with a BK14 for significantly less money and don't feel like I lost anything with that trade. Not much of a different size than the ESEE either IIRC.

Was watching one of Jim Skelton's videos and he had one of your beads on one of his knives. Gave you a little shout out. It was cool, your work is awesome man!

Sanrenmu 7010. Awesome Chinese knife for $12 shipped. Is it better than a $25 Rat or $30-40 Kershaw? Nope. But awesome awesome knife for $12.

It's definitely a cheap knife. But super impressive. Blade centering and lockup is solid. Only thing I don't like is "tip down" carry. It's totally a Chris Reeve Sebenza knockoff.

Cheapest ones would be the ZTs in the bottom left corner. 0303 and 0300BW at $250 each. The custom Hinderer XM18, Hoback A8, Direware solo full ti recurve go for well over a grand. The rest are in the $300-$800 range.
