Any reason in particular I shouldn't send my spyderco to them to sharpen. Cost is shipping there and $5 to ship back. I read on the spyderco forum about their sharpening being a little off and removing too much material but those were post dated from 7 years ago.

Usually, they will sharpen using a belt and then adjust the piece before sending it back. It's a good deal in most cases.

I don't see the point in shipping a knife somewhere to get sharpened. You can get it razor sharp with some basic sharpening tools. I have a Lansky sharpener and most of the time I just run the knives through a steel to keep them honed. I can't see how they can do a better job. You also stand the odd chance of the knife getting lost in the mail.

I've sent two knives to Benchmade for their sharpening service. I have no experience sharpening knives the correct way. Yes there are numerous videos online about how to sharpen knives. Some blades have different shapes which are more prone to errors when sharpening. In my case I also had some chipped diamondwood scales and I asked them to take a look. They replaced the scales free of charge in addition to sharpening the blades. So different people have different reasons for sending knives in to be sharpened.

I can definitely sharpen my own knives. But here's the deal with a reputable mfg. The knife gets sharpened and it gets a once over. So lubed and the blade re-centered. Sometimes, they'll replace worn parts for you as well.

If you're not cool with sharpening, it's a great deal. Even if you send it only occasionally.

I told myself I wasn’t going to get any new knives for a while, but then I saw this and I had to have it.

    back to bone stock.
I had a wobbly hinge. They pulled it apart and changed bushings. It came back solid. They also sharpened it. It was frightening how sharp it was. I find it’s easier to keep a blade sharp than to sharpen it from dull. The sharpener person at Benchmade doesn’t suck.
When I buy a used Benchmade, I send it to them first for a once over.

I have folks ship me knives all the time for sharpening. I also belong to a knife forum and do it for the other members there. Guaranteed hair popping, receipt whittling, toilet paper slicing sharp, when you get it back!
