I jabbed my mora into a lemon and left it there for 30 minutes. Probably could have used more time.

Not hold an edge as long as? Which type of carbon steel are you referring to? Depending on the carbon or non stainless steel you are referring to maybe but my experience is not at all in the same boat as yours for edge retention. The newer knife specific steels are tougher, corrosiin resistant temper better and more evenly and in my experience hold an edge better. Much better in fact while they may be tougher to sharpen if you let them go to far they hold up edgewise much better. But that's my opinion, and the general opinion of my buddies in the knife making business.

Ken Onion, Mick Strider, Rick Hinderer, Brian Fellhoelter, Ernie Emerson all of them use one of the newer steels not the same ones obviously but the general consensus is those newer steels perform over all better than most of the carbon steels. Including reams of studies and side by side comparisons especially by Ken when he was still working w kershaw and now that he is designing and doing projects w CRKT. You also don't see many carbon steels in the folder business. Randall's are Iconic for sure and fantastic blades don't get me wrong but they could be even better if the same patterns were built in some of the newer steels. Like I said just my opinion. And some well tested and abused side by side tests.

The average end user however won't notice a large difference typically other than the corosion resistance. And perhaps an ease of sharpening on A2 in that regard I would have to agree sharpening almost all of the carbon steels other than d2 and s7 is pretty wasy.

The makers I mentioned are the buddies in question. And Strider doesn't pvd much these days they ise s30v on almost all of their models including the fixed blades. Onion has tested lots of different steels on the same pattern side by side on his annual Alaskan Bear hunt w the disabled vets group And the guides and hands down for that application bear skinning lol cpm154 works best. Of course that's his research but we've been friends for years and I tend to believe him when it comes to knives and steels. But I am ok w agreeing to disagree to each his own.

I'm split between traditional lines. I want my Hinderers to be made out of s35vn or elmax, but I want my GECs to be made out of traditional carbon steel and take a nice patina. Plenty of room for both in the knife world.

OK guys...question for any and all of you..since we're talking knives...do any of you use a worksharp ? What do you/ don't you like about it ? I've always been a stone man myself...but a very tempting offer has come up.

I have a Worksharp. It works fast and will leave a hair shaving edge, but I only use it on my EDC. It's too easy to scratch the sides of the blades. I can sharpen a knife without scratching the sides of a blade, but you gotta be real careful and take your time which is not what i bought it for.

Bought one of these prior to a deployment almost ten years ago - just screams "tacticool," doesn't it?

It's a Strider BN - massive blade. Accordingly, it sits on a closet shelf, collecting dust.

What I really want in a knife is this:

I usually don't like damascus because I use my blades and feel like most damascus is too pretty to use....I like this one a lot...even if I would use it, just like is shoot and carry a mint unfired colt python. What's a knife for but to use.

And what's the maker on it and who made the damascus (I don't know if it is different or not)

Winkler for the win, I'd love one of his hawks, just don't have enough of a use for it to justify it
