Hey TW! Let's see your knives!

Not really a knife, but I just got this to replace my United M48 Hawk.
Its a Gerber Downrange Tomahawk.
The M48 is a great bank for buck tomahawk, but this thing is so much nicer. And will be more functional. Not cheap. I could have bought 5-6 United tomahawks for the price of the gerber
Still a little cheaper than the benchmade tho...

Well don't I feel like an idiot. Protech called me on Sunday to let me know that the blade isn't cracked and that the line appears to be some really strong adhesive. I have no idea how it got on the blade, or what it's from.

The guy at the shop said that it took an industrial strength solvent to get most of it off and that they had to reblast the blade to get all of it. I must have stuck it in something really sticky.

I even ran some goo gone across the area thinking that it might be something on the blade and not a crack. When goo gone didn't touch it I assumed it was fractured.

Protech cleaned, blasted, re-etched the markings, and sharpened the blade for me. I did have to pay $15 for them to ship it back to me, but no big deal. Glad to have it coming back this way.

Oh, and of course the pro tech guy called me while I was on a trail at Gilmer while being spotted up a section of trail. That made for an interesting conversation.

I received an email from Protech this afternoon with the tracking number for my knife.

 

My latest baby... Helle Fassekallen. It's my fieldcraft knife of choice for backpacking and camping. I'm working up a Kydex sheath with a small Tek Lok so I can carry it scout style. For now, the belt loop does just fine and keeps the birch handle from taking any abrasion from a Kydex sheath. This thing is profiled so well and was shaving-sharp right out of the box. It takes a stropping very easily and is right back to sharp again after a few uses.

 

Up my alley. Beautiful. Helle makes great knives! I'd love one in stacked birch or stacked leather with some brass.

 

It's beauty is not just in its lines, handle grain and blade polish but it's also in its simplicity. And, I couldn't be Norwegian without having a Norwegian blade.

 

Agreed. I used to really be into tacticals and black coated everything, now I just want a nice wood handle (or stacked leather), with a scandi or scandi-vex grind and some nice leather sheath.

 

Exactly. If I want to fell trees, I have other blades for that. The Kabar BK2 goes everywhere I go, but when I want to carry light, there's nothing like a useful classic blade. I'm not into folders anymore after having some break on me.

 

Pretty much switched to fixed blade EDC last year. Folders have their place, but if I can carry a fixed blade then that's what I want.

Where'd you pick up the Helle?

 

I stole it on Amazon. I had it in my cart for over a month, not wanting to pay the $104. It dropped for one hour to $67 so I pounced on it.

Those are some sexy pieces of hardware. I won't spend more on a knife than I would on a gun, so it's out of my price range but those are some fine pieces of work. If I was to pull the trigger on one of these, it would be this one...

am i reading the description right? it is a carbon steel blade sandwiched in stainless?

alot of models to choose from. the blade profile i like has the ugliest handle..hahah.

 

Full stainless laminate.

The center portion tests out to be 58-59 on the Rockwell scale, and the outside steel is 18/8 stainless steel specially developed by Helle and a Norwegian steel mill.

 

cheap? inexpensive, yes. but not cheap. it is an awesome blade.

I have one, I agree, that wasn't what I was insinuating.

Mora makes $100 + knives, too. Which is what I was asking about since they're similar to the Helle knives, which the $12 Craftline or Companion is not.
