okay ill be honest, i never thought i would be looking to buy a crew cab truck...let alone a japanese truck. but here i am looking for a doublecab with the long bed. im selling the f150 soon because gas is going up again and not building houses anymore so i dont need the hauling power, but colorado is too small and i dont even know if they make danger rangers anymore?

ANYWAY, in the f150 forums guys would come in to say "what are some major problems with these trucks?" and we always say the spark plugs breaking off inside the engine on the 5.4 (which is another small reason im selling). so now im that guy wondering what are the major problems of these tacomas? 05-newer. i know about the leaf springs TSB and some mentioned a lot of squeaks and noises coming from the bed because it is bolted and not welded together or something?

im pretty mechanically inclined so dont worry about scaring me away. what are some widespread problems with this generation of tacomas?

thanks guys, any help is greatly appreciated!

They only major problem I have with these trucks is driving it too much and spending too much time on it.

The only worrisome thing that I will point to is the frame issues that plagued first gen Tacoma's. I mention this as it took many years for this issue to show itself, and have no idea what if anything has been changed at production to prevent it on current trucks. If you do not live in a northern state, this point would be moot anyway, as the rotten frames are centered in the rust belt states.

No problems with my 05 so far. The tailgate is a little weak that's about it.

I've had the truck for 60k. Problems:

Weak rear springs (TSB can fix that, I went AAL)
    Weak tailgate (TSB can fix)
Easy to steal tailgate (hose clamp mod)
wheel bearings (replaced driver side at 37k)
engine ticking (got used to it)
replaced two CV joints (more related to the lift)
no engine and bed lights, where some trucks come with this stock (added my own)

other than that, EXCELLENT TRUCK. GET ONE.

And it's hardly even Japanese btw. Nothing is even built in Japan, only designed there (if even that).

There are a few issues, the rear spring TSB being one
but its only a problem if you want to be able to carry heavy loads
without the TSB you have one comfortable ride.
you wont go wrong owning one of these, thats why i'm on my third truck
(in addition to the 2 4-runners and 2 minivans )

By cv joints I assume instead of carrier bearings they are called by the cv name correct?

    .

Love my Tacoma and my main complaint is the "whimpy tailgate".

I had rear spring TSB done and that did wonders for my payload and ride.

Really sad to say this ... but you will not be sorry that you left Ford for a Tacoma.

PS ... This is maybe my 7th Toyota truck (Tundras, Tacomas & older Toyota p/u models). Had every truck brand and Toyotas have been the best with Nissan in second place.

You and I have 2009's. I thought they fixed this a year or two before ours.

As for problems, there really isn't much that hasn't been mentioned. There is some stuff I'd like to see added or changed but I can't particularly say they are "problems".

Oh wait, I thought of one. The gas pedal will stick and kill you.:)

No locking tailgate! I know I can install aftermarket locks, but reading horror stories about them unlocking on their own and locking when not desiere make me wary.

Even with newer 2009 tailgate, it is still whimpy .... and yes, a locking tailgate would be cool.
