I've done it once. Sketchy as shit, but it worked. Opening the door was 100% necessary. Letting it down has never worked very smoothly for me

OEM bottle jack with free rock adapter. Found at road side.
Can cook on a rock too.

I would rather use the hi-lift as a 'come-along'. (ratchet hand winch)

I worked in an autowrecker for a good number of years. Highjacks were the only way to lift, move or modify a vehicle to get parts or panels off. The best advise I can give it take a step back. Look at everything and figure out how things will move while you lift. A stable base is a must. And if the vehicle has to be up for any length of time don't leave it on the jack. Grab whatever you can find to put it down on, jack stand preferred but cribbing, or a log if necessary out in the bush. It doesn't matter what style jack you use. They can all kill you!

You guys realize this was the standard jack that came in all new cars in the 60's and 70's right? Everybody used them even old ladies.

The only difference between then and now?

ARB Bumper, SOS sliders, SOS rear bumper, SOS skid plate. OME Lift. Some other stuff.
Similar but not the same, those jacks had the lifting point that went into a slot in the bumper of the car to help stabilize the jack.

Only some makes. Many" Bumper Jacks" were the same as a Hi-lift.

A bit OT, in that there is no DANGER....but..

When using a Hi-Lift jack as a power pull with low stretch ROPE, What is a useful rigging to combat slack and stretch? (Think 50 foot to the nearest anchor)

Z drags require more take up than most 3 foot hi-lifts accommodate.

Pulleys and Prusiks and hitches...Oh! NO! ;-)

Bumper jacks had a steadier connection to the base plate than hi lifts. My ‘78 Ford has a slots in the bumper to prevent slippage. Still you only jacked up the vehicle enough to change a flat and never got between the vehicle and the ground.

These are things we learned watching dad change tires. Most kids today have parents that can’t change tires. They have AAA.

I was thinking chain or cable, not rope.

Rock sliders and a hi lift adapter FTW. Still very dangerous.

Is they don’t work for shit on any stock vehicle anymore. All they will do is bust shit up on a stock vehicle as their are no jacking points towards the edge of a vehicle (except maybe the hitch if the vehicle has one).

I was always taught not to get in between the 2 objects or near the line when winching. So, isn’t it dangerous to use a come along or high lift jack as one?
Even w a blanket on the line metal pieces can become projectiles. No?

I’m so stuck I could die out here. Now, let’s get a couple tons of truck, some springity, stretchety stuff, a few bits of floppity steel doo dads, some manky trees, rocks and janky welded on bits, tighten it all up with granddad’s 40lb cast iron stump yanker, ‘til everything ‘s all creakity twangity, then stick all our piggies, both peepers and our noggin full o’ chompers right down in there to see why the old clickety clacker ain’t snippety snappin’…

    what could go wrong?

That’s an impressive jack. I wonder how it works in actual usage instead of staged videos

I just found one on sale for a great price. It will likely never go with me in my truck.

I'll use it around the property, pulling fence posts, clearing logs of the trail, lifting the lawn tractor, etc. Super handy for stuff like that.

With the truck my bottle jack is much better and if I really feel I need something extra I'll throw my come-a-long in the truck.
