Damn. I have a front runner mount as well and it drives me insane. I just ordered a neoprene case to try to shut it up.

Back at post #19(?) there is a picture of a jack that has a Lift-Mate anchored into a wheel. While the photo is showing a situation like a tire change (where you would need a jack stand as well) - it will often-times lift an outfit out of a rut far enough to put something under there (rocks/branches/etc.) - and get "un-stuck". If you are on your own and have to McGyver yourself out of a jam - its better to have one than not.

Probably the worst thing about the jacks - I've had mine since '81 - is the tendency of rookies to get hurt or tear up equipment while using them. Just don't get hurt learning the hard way.

There is nothing that can cause carnage like a farm jack. Well, except for a crane. Crane accidents are pretty much the definition of carnage. But farm jacks are a close second. :)

A friend of mine, a native of these parts, on seeing my jack in my rig said: "Oh wow, you carry a widow-maker?" Have come to learn that term is more commonly used over hi-lift or farm jack.

Not really. You would then lift the whole rear axle instead of just one side. This would cause the truck to roll as the parking break is in the rear.

I have used my high lift quite a few times. My advise
    - keep it covered or stored in a dry place
    - keep it lubed
    - try to use a highlift base
    - slider adapters make it much safer or bumpers with cutouts
    - if you are jacking it up and it doesn't fee stable stop and reset
    - Always open the door when highlifting off a slider
    - Keep your face away from the handle.
    - When you stop jacking under load keep the handle in the upright position.
Practice in your driveway. You don't want the first time you use the jack to be on the trail.

Never thought about keeping the door open. That's smart! Are you working on the truck supported only by the Hi-Lift though? o_O

The story on the picture above was I was driving back from sledding near my inlaws cabin and the steering felt loose. I looked underneath and the bolt for my lower unitball only had a few threads holding it on. Would have been really bad if it fell off. There was 6 inches of compacted snow everwhere but my father inlaw hadn't moved his car since before the storm. He pulled out so I had a clear place to work. He also brought out a floor jack that pretty much had 6 inches of lift. So I used my highlift. In the snow. on a sloped hill.

Because highlifts love to punch holes in doors.... Especially when starting to go up or right when the last of the tension is on the jack.
