I believe that may be a Mike Rowe quote. He's a huge supporter of some sort of training or education but not necessarily college.

 

And that was my father.....He had to drop out of school after the 10th grade because of the Great Depression.....Had to go to work to help support the rest of the family. He was a gifted carpenter. He went to work for a boat builder, made his way up the ladder there, served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, then started his own business after the war. He was a general contractor who specialized in Doctors offices and medical facilities construction. The best word I can use to describe him is "driven". He started off penniless, and died a VERY wealthy man......without a high school diploma. But he was the exception rather than the rule.... My point with that is, he would have been successful with or without that piece of paper. I'd imagine the percentage of people who succeed to such a level is relatively a low number, educated or not. All things equal, the vast majority of people will need that diploma.

 

Another thing......I would be curious as to which side of this debate each individual is on, based on who has kids of their own and who doesn't. Trust me on this one guys.....When you have kids of your own and they're deciding if they want to continue their education or not, you'll probably find yourself becoming far more adamant about completing/furthering your education. BTDT, got two "kids" with doctorates....and worn out vocal chords of my own from pushing them in that direction.

 

Back then in the 60s and 70s. It was easier to get away with not that paper. 2015 makes it a little more difficult. Cause everyone has it forced upon them to go to school.


I'm just saying, school is not for everyone. Getting a diploma and going to college would have been. Waste of time and money for me.

 

Me too! I mean, I went to college during those years, but YEAH!

 

Hell in 2015 that piece of paper is just about equivalent to a Bachelors degree now as far as employment requirements go.

Idk where you are from. But no police department is going to higher a high school educated person on the force. But then again. They only require 20 hours of college lol

I have a son, and by God - he will attend his preschool. Seriously though, high school is not an option in my opinion, it is a mandate. College will be up to him, but I hope he chooses to pursue some form of education, whether an academic university or learning a trade. To me, a diploma and degree get you in the door but it's still your skills (interpersonal or technical) that ultimately dictate whether you succeed or fail in your given field. I'm wrapping up grad school this year and my wife is returning for her masters starting next year while still being a middle school teacher...so obviously education is very important to us and we hope he values it as well.

There are sometimes good reasons for dropping out of high school, but completely giving up on education (whether it is school or otherwise) isn't something to be proud of and isn't likely to get you very far in life. I didn't finish high school for my own family reasons, but I eventually got a computer science degree without ever getting a GED, and I now do pretty well.

You can be the smartest guy around, but just putting "I'm a really smart guy" on your resume isn't going to get your foot in the door. Finishing high school is good, but that doesn't tell employers a whole lot (while not finishing tells them a little). A college degree is a little different -- it's the first big project that you are solely responsible for completing, mostly on your own. It's not necessarily about what the degree is in, it is the fact that you took on a project and completed it. I personally don't hire new professionals or promote experienced people beyond a certain point unless the have a degree -- I need them to have some self-motivation and be able to take some initiative. Having a degree is no guarantee of that, but not having one is quite a bit riskier.

I know a bunch of dumbasses with degrees that shouldn't have a degree. Some even working in a field that their degree doesn't pertain to but still get promoted because they have a degree. Logic I guess.

Sure, I wouldn't argue that. Being of average intelligence just means that half the people in the world are smarter than you and half are not. A degree is just a degree, a single data point -- but it is a data point.

Getting promoted just for having a degree sounds a little odd, but from an employer's point of view (if they miss the part of identifying the person as a dumbass), if all other things appear equal, the person with the degree is going to get the promotion. Life isn't fair, and half the people in the world are dumbasses depending on where you draw the line.

 

That's also not really the case, I've seen some interns get hired on and move up the ladder pretty quick because they have huge boobs and no degree.
