Do not EVER use anything intended to clean or polish metal on glass... Bon Ami is still an abrasive just like Comet and Barkeeper's Friend. It will scratch, likewise Brasso (which contains acids as well as mild abrasives).

    Steel wool, doesn't matter if it's 00, 0000, 0000000, or 00000000000, it will scratch.

    LOL

I've used a lot of stupid things on my glass, but steel wool is not one of them.

Now... a buddy in college took the "stupid car tricks" prize.

We used to do a "topper" of corn starch after waxing our cars. Old hotrodder's trick, looked great and smoothed out the swirls (don't know if it would be effective on modern acrylics and applied sealants).

So this guy went into mom's kitchen and grabbed a box of...

    yes....

    Corn MEAL!

Scratched the living fuck out of his car.

    Derp derpde do.....

For a guy who makes telescopes you should be ashamed of your statement.

No respectable glass guys I know would ever say such a thing especially to the public.

and why in the hell would anyone clean a windshield with a 2" razor blade? Derping the herp that day or what?

I've done this on every car I have owned since I started driving. It has never harmed the windshields at all. No scratches, no haze, blur .. nothing. Also, this is not a weekly practice, we are talking 2, maybe 3 times a year.

You might want to backtrack and read this whole thread. Buried somewhere within was the answer you were looking for.

What you did was no bueno. But I do thank you for topping this thread for me. I took the time to read through it and ordered the correct stuff. :D

I am a Biochemist with DuPont Corporation and have been so for over 30 years. I have designed a glass product called SentryGlas. I engineered SentryGlas as a safety glass with interlacing structural properties for insulation qualities. This design is very high-performance with a cost index that is much more superior to any substandard multi-grade residential, commercial or windshield glass on the market. As a Biochemist and Engineer of heavy duty glass products, I will point out there are different types of laminate in the glass that
    have different allowable
stresses markers causing wear or breakage.

With that being said, I too recommend using the Weiman Glass Cook Top Cleaner / Polish. The product will NOT hurt the glass, as immense pressures (in the metric ton range) would have to be applied for this product to do any real damage. It takes heat and pressure to make glass. But this is not what is described by the self proclaimed glass experts on this post.

I'm perplexed nat, by your statment "Thousands of microscopic scratches has the potential to weaken the glass, making it more susceptible to cracking, shattering, etc. We are talking safety glass, not tempered glass".

Really nat? Please explain how this happens on a molecular level within the substrate of the molecules of glass and do you have the exact calculations of how you came to these scientific conclusions???

On another note, What self respecting American would purchase Japanese Junk for over inflated prices? I don't own a Toyota Tacoma, but saw this thread and was amazed that many folks here are misinformed about glass. Glass is a hearty product and can take a lot of abuse. Scratches, Pits & Polishing are part of the life cycle of glass. Yes, I too use this product on all of my Bentley's glass.
