High beam headlights not working in 2023, How long are headlight bulbs covered for in a 2023 tacoma?

Went to get out of a shitty desert 4x4 road late at night and my high beams would not turn on, when I went to turn them on it just went to AUTO on the dashboard even though it was on the high beam setting, here is the kicker, if you pull the manual high beam lever towards you and hold it, they work, they will not STAY on on their setting you have to manually pull the lever towards you and hold it.

So I know this is funny because you would assume headlight bulbs are consumable and not covered under warranty, well I looked at my agreement and it doesnt say anywhere they are NOT covered even under consumables, so it looks like(and I have read online) that headlight bulbs ARE covered under the 3 year/36k mile warranty which I am only 1 year, 7k miles in. I just want to know before I go out and buy new headlights and what would be causing this issue in a one year old truck with all OEM parts.

 

Sounds like a relay not latching

 

That sounds more like an electronic issue than bulbs if they work on flash to pass but not on regular high.

If that's the case it should be covered if your still under the bumper to bumper warranty.

 

Did you try turning off the auto setting? The button is on the left below the vent.

The sensor is probably just dirty. Wash the truck and the auto feature will most likely start working properly again. Or just shut the feature off via the button like most people do.

 

you know you may be right, since i am always in the desert my front sensor gets lots of dust on it and wont work with the TSS safety stuff sometimes from it, i will try that later when i get home, i pulled the bulbs and they looked good and reconnected, got a dealer appt monday. thanks for the replies guys

 

Well, you know it's not the bulb because they work pulling the stalk back, so that part of the conversation is now moot. Really, the best thing you can do is to turn off that damned Auto switch and use your lights the old fashioned way, and very likely, it's the sensor as others have mentioned. The Auto headlight feature is about as dumb a feature as I have found. Much better to be in manual control of your lights.

It does sound like you've got the halogen OEM headlight assemblies. Those come from the factory with what they call Long Life bulbs in your low beams, which indeed are long life, but at the expense of being quite a bit dimmer. Your high beams should be standard H9 bulbs and are plenty bright enough on their own and there is no upgrade path for them anyway. The only upgrade to your headlights you should consider if you're thinking about replacing the entire assemblies is to upgrade to the OEM LED units. That'll run you around $1500 to buy the lights and an adapter harness. The next best thing is to swap out the H11 Long Life low beam bulbs for the same H9 bulbs that are in your high beams, which required a very slight modification to the plug and a slight grinding to one of the tabs on the bulb. That's a $20 upgrade that will make a noticeable difference. Don't both with any third party headlight crap, as it will just be a waste of money and a downgrade in performance, no matter what the advertising claims may be.

If the auto setting is on the truck will decide when to turn the high beams on after you select the high beam on the stalk. It should have a little green “auto” on the dash if I recall. You can only override that by pulling and holding like you did. Turning off the auto switch will give you normal control of the high beams.
