    I dont know if this applies to you;

    DISADVANTAGES OF SYNTHETIC OIL
Cost is one big disadvantage. Also, can't really be used in an older engine due to the nature of synthetics, it tends to be a bit thinner at high temperature. This can exacerbate oil leaks and oil burning. Since the oil is more expensive, it makes the leaks/burning more expensive Another disadvantage is that synthetic oil usually is lower in viscosity at low temperatures. It will have a tendency to drain down faster. You may hear your engine more on cold startup. Obtained from: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motoroil.html

Use a mechanic's stethoscope or whatever you call it to locate the origin of that chain noise so you can deal with it. It can't be good for your prized investment. Eat Steak

My engine Revs high at startup as well. Even on a 72 degree morning...

It calms down after about 25-30 seconds. Then I drive off into the distance.

None currently, but I would like a better sounding exhaust and perhaps a cold air pack and some color coded step bars
As I have posted before, in my manual(06) Toyota doesn't fully endorse syn oil. However, syn oil will not cause problems in new engines and many of TW members use syn oil.
Perhaps the TW should do a survey of members to see who uses what?

Any engine that rattles like a chain should be looked at asap. I would not go messing around with idle speeds and with any computerized product it takes a trained tech person to get it right. Since it is new and under warranty let them take care of it, properly.
I am surprised that some dealers are offering partial syn or full syn, which probably means Toyota doesn't give a hoot what you use, just that its changed regularly.

In Mass. like most states, a customer can use any oil and filter, that meets or exceeds Toyota's recommendations, to be covered under warranty.
I will try to drop by my dealer with in the next two days and see what they have to say about syn oil and if they offer it.

I will ask my dealer about synthetic as well when I get my oil changed for the first time. I will also ask them about the Rav4 since my wife has a brand new 2006 and we put a ton of miles on it every day.

Mine starts at about 2300 when the ambient temperature is over 32 degrees. I have been to both dealer and Toyota's Customer Experience Line. Eventually, after a lot of hassle, They admitted this is not "normal." Then I found out Toyota has seven recorded "cases" of this. The service manager at the dealership called Toyota and they told him they were not going to deal with this. I believe there are a number of reasons they should, and I am going to arbitration with it. What information can you other owners with the same problem share with me? I'll carry the ball if you you want to get on board. I've got a son-in-law who is a high-octane lawyer & is willing to help. Contact me through the site or phegleton@juno.com

Mine has actually stopped idling so high since I passed 8000 miles (and the outside temp went over 60 degrees).

I made a post on the high idle subject a few days ago, but don't see it here. Must have gotten it in the wrong box. My 06 cold starts at 1300 below 32 degrees, then hops to 2300 at 34 degrees and on up to 75 degrees. I've been recording data since February. The duration is 2-3 minutes at 32, decreasing steadily to just a few seconds at 75. I've been to the dealer, they tried to tell me it was wasn't doing that! Then the service adviser witnessed it and they changed their tune; asked me to leave it over night, actually expressed concern. They reset the computer memory. Next morning, same thing, all recorded on service order. Then the service manager called Toyota. He said they would not act on the problem.
Note the warning in the owners' manual, "Do not race a cold engine," also, note the instruction to start, wait 30 seconds, and drive away. Try that on an icy morning at 2300 rpm! I have filed a request for arbitration and it has been accepted. Reply with whatever information you have gathered to support this case. Maybe I can set a precedent for all of us. Hammering dry, cold engines with a 2300 rpm start? This is normal? Hello?

Tom, I have a 06 also, with man trans and when it was zero degs, here in New England my truck would cold start idle at about 1300 rpms give or take a hundred. I have usually allowed my engine to warm up for 8-10 min to get the cab a bit warmer as on occasion I get a stiff clutch pedal( which is addressed in other posts)
After that I have found no problems.
Addressing your problem, there is something definately amiss there, 2300 is way to high, perhaps you could suggest them replacing the throttle positioning sensor or a check of the computer settings. I am not mechanic but it would seem that if the throttle is to high they would start to replace the components that control it.
There must be solution somewhere, even if it comes from a non-toyota source.
One definate thing is that a 2300 cold start on any morning is not good for the engine.
You are doing the correct process getting your dealer service managers involved and documented. Please keep us informed and thanks.

They do that so eventually they will have repeat customers.

My engine revs higher at start up if its -40C/F below or +30C.
Strange thing is of all the Tacos I test drove in Canada I didn't notice this happening. The one I ended up buying was brought up from the US and it was the only one I recall doing this.
