I'm experiencing a high idle speed and excessive warm up time on my 2016 Tocoma with the new 3.5 engine. It takes the vehicle approx 11-17 mins to reduce the idle speed to a non-launch speed when cold cranking. Additionally, I can drive the vehicle for 2 or more hours and leave it sitting for 30 or more minutes and experience the same cold cranking routine. It's highly annoying. The cold cranking rpm is around 1200-1400 rpms and failure to wait for the vehicle to warm up causes it to launch forward as if my foot is on the accelerator at 50 miles an hour. Toyota has had 3 attempts to address this dangerous situation with this vehicle and each time they return it be me after inspecting it stating it is operating as designed. They state it is a new engine and operates this way for emissions and fuel economy, but I feel it is damaging mechanical components of the vehicle like the u-joints, transmission, motor mounts, etc. which are taking the brunt of the forced acceleration from the rev'ed up high idle speed. I mean, who has 17 mins to wait for the vehicle to warm up each time you drive it. I have filed a lemon law complaint as I feel Toyota is addressing this problem as a corporation and not as a consumer. Obviuosly, a vehicle is not expected to be pulled into drive at an rpm speed equivalent to 50 mph. I feel it is both dangerous and irresponsible to not pay attention to this issue with these vehicles especially in light of Volkswagens current problems and Audi's problems in the mid '90s.

Welcome to tw. Depending on your ambient temperature, nothing sounds like it's out of the ordinary, in your vehicle be fine going into gear at that rpm

Mine does the same thing when cold... very high idle. It does settle down after use.
I doubt Toyota will agree this is for emissions, but a side affect of the atkinson design.
My RAV4 had the 3.5L V6 and never had the idle or rough vibrations issues of this V6.

Unless you can show ANY actual damage, you are not going to be able to ''lemon law'' your Taco and I doubt you can show or prove any. You may not like how it operates [hell, I bought a 2015 because I didn't want the 3.5] but that isn't lemon law material.

You may be able to outright sell it for close to what you paid for it if it annoys you.

Thanks all, it does annoy me because it fells like I'm destroying the vehicle. Toyota's reply was that they don't have transmission problems...haha. It all seems like a circular argument. All the other Toyota vehicles don't do this high prolonged idle speed thing. After a couple mins or so the engine speeds drops to a smooth shift into drive with no launch. Since this is a new engine I feel this issue will result in a program update later. I live in Atlanta and the temperature here is in the 60's hardly cold weather.

Your engine is fine. Mine goes to the same RPM when I start it up. It is not necessary to let it warm up for 11 to 17 minutes. The vehicle will actually warm up quicker if you are driving it.

Mine does the same thing. I agree with you that it is unsafe, especially in a small parking space like a garage. I'll never get an auto tranny again. 6 speed manuals are cheaper by far and have no issues...and run stronger.

Honestly all that sounds like shorted ECT. When it gets shorted it does high idle, when goes dead usually ends up making super low idle.
Have them check it, most likely that is your culprit. I had that in another Toyota and after I swapped ECT never had problems agains.

Sad part is, how low quality is, for ECT to fail so early.

I doubt it, as all of them do it, and mine has done so since day one...

I have a 16 4x4 off road w the auto 3.5 V6 and I have experienced this as well since day one. I try to let it run til it drops but yes kinda annoying ... I'm at 15,000 miles and going in for service was going to ask about this but sounds like I will get the run around ... bottom line apply good pressure to brake pedal if engaging in at high RPM ha ha

If it still does it after you set the timing, dwell and adjust the fuel mixture, back off the idle speed screw on the carburetor.

Do you need to know, or care?
Mine is the same. High idle with the intent of getting that catalytic warmed up as fast as possible to reduce emissions.

All other Toyota's don't have this engine either.

With the launch you are feeling, it sounds like low ATF problems that all tow packaged Tacomas have right now. If you have not checked your ATF level I suggest doing so.

I checked mine. One quart low. Added it...at the dealership. Still does it. It idles way too high way too long...

remember back in the day when fuel injection was new, they said don't touch the gas when you start her, and wait for the idles to drop before you go?

that was then, this is now. nothing makes sense nowadays. gawd i need a tune on this thing.

My brand new 17 Tacoma TRD 4x4 Double Cab with the 3.5 Automatic is doing this same idle high BS as well. It NEVER drops until I finally put it in gear and get moving down the road. Then I can stop at a red light and put it in Park or Neatral and it will finally idle around 600 to 700 RPM.. But cold starts (Anything where the truck has not run for the last 45 mins or so) will ALWAYS idle around 1200 RPM... I have let it sit over 30 mins warming up and it never drops below 1000 RPM until I actually put it in gear and get moving... I too am worried about this as it jerks and trys to launch when putting in gear at this RPM... This can NOT be good for the ujoints, transmission mounts, and motor mounts... My dealer is saying this is a normal thing with these trucks BUT they say they have received hundreds of complaints about it. They also told me Toyota will not make an update unless they receive 10,000 + complaints... I call BS... This high idle is NOT RIGHT...
