02 Tacoma. At first start-up I get high (1800-200) rpm for about 15-20 minutes of driving, a little less in summer, but well past warm-up. If I push in clutch and coast up to a stop, engine will run at 2000 rpm until I come to a complete stop. When the wheels stop turning, idle comes down to normal (750). High idle in neutral resumes when I go to the next stop. This goes on for 15 to 20 minutes of driving, then quits. Any ideas???

Mine is doing pretty much the same thing... cant figure out why. Sometimes it does not stop the whole drive, sometimes it does not do it at all.

Well, rats! This 1st gen group has helped me with headlights, seatbelt retractors, squeaky clutch pedal, etc., but no one can help with this high idle problem? Don't feel bad; I've tried half a dozen shops and two dealers and no one else can figure it out either. Dealer shops always come up with "cannot duplicate problem in shop" a real copout, which translates to "we don't know and we don't care."

Thanks for giving it a try.

I had the same issue on a 2005 mustang I used to have, never could figure out what was wrong with it. It Aways concerned me, so I've been watching this thread hoping for an answer. Good luck man!

I'd try a new coolant temp sensor and replace any cracked or brittle vacuum hoses. Make sure the EGR valve is functioning properly and isn't stuck open or closed.

Clean the IAC valve. Its located on the bottom of the throttle body. It controls your idle.

I have this same idle issue and I have cleaned the IAC valve. Here is my thought on that. Obviously it is working as it is opening too much causing a high idle. Also when at a complete stop it idles down perfect. Also when I don't have the issue it idles perfect. I have thought about the coolant temperature sensor as well. If that sensor is faulty, the computer could be in warm up mode instead of switching like it should. Just my thoughts.

Hi there, i have the same issue. Have had it since i got the tx.
Have had at several dealerships. No real answer from any of them. I had an 05 4 cyl. That did not do this. I also noticed i do not have a cold start pump either. Not sure if any of you do complaining.
The most recent trip to dealer said that it is for smog purposes to burn off extra stuff in the chambers.....lol its fuel injected not carbureted I don't buy it I told him and they told me that they give me the number for the engineer so I could talk to him so he could blow some more smoke.....I definitely will be watching this to see if anything comes up

IAC valve acting up, or a vacuum leak is the first thing that comes to mind.

It's your idle air control valve. It reads that you're traveling at a faster rate of speed than zero and it'll adjust the idle accordingly. When it starts wearing out or is dirty it acts up and doesn't operate correctly.

I would say a vacuum leak given the age of his vehicle, either he has a vacuum leak somewhere, or his MAF is dirty if the IAC has been addressed.
