Greetings Yota Sages! I would humbly solicit your wisdom!

I have a 2000 Prerunner 2.7. Runs like the day I inherited it from my Great-Grandfather at
61k, it now has 194k. I used to trust whatever mechanic I took it to, but after finding my maintenance schedule and looking at wisdom on here I noticed that my mechanic "inspected" my truck every oil change, but never, in the entire 133,000 miles I've taken it to him, has he ever reccomended new Coolant, new ATF, new PS fluid. Also valve cover gasket was leaking and he didn't tell me. Thanks google. they say they check all fluids and inspect! BS. I learned how to maintain my Truck as of a few months ago, and it is now up to date according to the manual.

However, are there any other items that, if I was, say, bored, or wanted to be extra careful, I could look at inspecting/replacing as a cautionary measure. Are there things you guys do that isn't in the manual, especially considering the high mileage?

This Truck has cost me so little money in the 6 years I've owned it's ridiculous. I want to stay ahead of the game and take care of her.

Toyota's are built to last. Change the oil, serpentine/timing belts (1st gens), differential fluid, coolant, spark plugs, clean the throttle body (MAF too), and grease the u-joints on the driveshaft. Otherwise, keep on driving and inspect every oil change.

Ok. Didn't know about Throttle body and MAF. Just check and clean when dirty or is there a recommended interval?

    Thanks for the tip!

MAF is so easy might as well do it any time you're under the hood for anything bigger than an oil change.

No need to change the timing belt. You don't have one. You have a timing change. Which unless it's really stretched is just fine.

This, very much this. Toyota's are tough and will most likely die to rust before you can kill the engine. Unless you're stupid and don't do any maintenance whatsoever.

Also, 194k isn't high. That truck's got way more life left.

Every ~100k people tend to change lower ball joints (oem only). So id check those and upper ball joints

Correct, that's why I put (1st gens) in parentheses. OP has a 2000, so his does NOT have a timing belt.

EDIT: Realized OP has 4 cylinder and not 6.

Not true. The 1st-gen 6-cyl has a belt, the 4-cyl has a chain.

Just to be clear, not all 1st gens have a Timing belt. @tan4x4 is correct.

The OPs info states he has the 2.7L motor. This motor has a timing chain that does not require 'regular' maintenance. This is different from the v6 3.4L in 1st gens.

The 4 Cylinder 2.4l 2RZ-FE and 2.7l 3RZ-FE both have timing chains, and not belts. The guides usually wear out before the chain, and you rarely need to replace the chain. If I'm not wrong the timing chain was made to last the lifetime of the engine.

The 3.4l v6 5VZ-FE has the timing belt which periodically needs to be replaced.

    Dear John from South Carolina,

This is the maintenance scheduled I do with our old Tacoma, which is now older than hell, and it still runs like a Swiss Watch at 168,xxx miles on it. Some of the stuff I am going to list, you have already done so I apologize for the redundancy. This is the basic stuff. I had to change the valve cover gaskets on mine about two years ago too.

    1. Change the oil and oil filter every 4,000 miles if you are using Dinosaur Blood for oil. If you are using a full synthetic motor oil change out your oil and filter every 6,000 to
7,000 miles. Try to use synthetic motor oil. It is a much better lubricant.

    2. Change your coolant every 30,000 miles or every 3 years, which ever comes first.

    3. Change out your the lubricant in your differentials, transfer case and manual transmission every four years if you are using full synthetics. If you are using regular lubricant,
you might want to change these lubricants every two years.

    4. If you have an automatic transmission, do a full service every other year with new fluid.

    5. Change your spark plugs every two years, and change out your spark plug wires every other time, you change out your spark plugs.

    6. Replace the fuel filter every two years.

    7. Change the air filter whenever it is dirty. Check it once a year.

    8. Change out the power steering fluid every two years.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

Yeah, Manufactured June 2000, so 17 years old in a few months. So you would maybe recommend replacing some of the hoses, maybe CV boots, that kind of thing?

Will do! Is that something a reasonably intelligent person who can read instructions on youtube can do himself? (I'm quite poor) or should I maybe buy the parts and take them to my mechanic for him to do?
