My parts store is a five minute walk or one minute drive from my house so disposal is easy :)

    Really?

$24 for 5 quarts of mobile1 at wally world, $4.99 for a filter at the dealer. 10 minutes or less to change it. And yes at least I know it was done correctly.

What's a full synthetic oil change go for these days? Has to be more than $30.

42.95 plus tax and title at my dealer with the coupon from their website.

i do basic standard issue oil. typically 33 out the door. plus free coffee and muffins.

i just hate tossing the plastic bottles and used filters in the trash. hate it. same goes for coolant.

If you keep an eye out on Mobil 1 website they often offer rebates that makes it less than that for an oil change.

$31.20 for Mobil1 (at Walmart for 6 qts, extrapolated from 2 containers at $26 each, with free disposal)
$13 Purolator PL30001 synthetic filter (extra large size; add .5 qts oil)
Change oil at 10K intevals equals $4.42 every 1K miles. Add coupons and/or get different oil filter for added savings.

Full synthetic oil change should cost you about $30-$35 for everything if you do it yourself.

Even if it cost MORE than getting it done I'd still do it myself. No way I'm letting one of those grease monkeys touch my engine.

You put the used oil back into the new containers and return those to the place you bought them. No matter which way you cut it's ending up "in the trash", just not your trash. They may even recycle the plastic bottles, who knows.

I run full synthetic. 35.00-40.00 per change to do it myself. Its more at a shop.

Plus I want to run the type of oil I want to run... not what ever the shop has.

Also a big factor for me is time. Its a waste of time to sit there waiting for someone to change my oil when it takes 30 minutes to do myself.

I recycle mine for free at the county dump / recycling center. open m-f + all day saturday. easy peasy. pull up, dump it in, keep my big jug to take home for next time.

Buy your oil at Walmart, not the parts stores. I can get a 5qt jug of Pennzoil Platinum at Walmart for $25. OEM filter at the dealer or Amazon only runs around $5.

Overall the cost of the oil change may work out to be equal to the quick lube places, BUT I’m getting synthetic oil and not some cheap dino oil out of a drum.

Because a oil change place will put a cheap filter and really cheap oil in your truck,is that really what you want put in your $35,000 truck.Sometimes they dont even change the oil, they just tell you they did.

That's better than the ol' impact gun on the drain plug. Because I've worked on 2 cars from family members that took them to jiffy lube and both drain plugs were stripped.

dont you guys have recycle programs that pick up at your curb? I just throw my used oil containers (without the used oil) in my recycle bins.

Used oil I take to auto parts store when i go to get other things (store in 5 gal fuel containers) in between trips.

I can change faster than i can drive to dealer and wait for them to do it and I am inspecting all the things under the vehicle when doing so.

$70+ for a full synthetic oil change out here in Hawaii. So doing it myself is way cheaper and I get to smoke a cigar and look at the truck afterwards.

lol Sounds like the type of state that is just begging for folks to toss common trash in a nearby business dumpster or town park trashcan.

California, Washington, New York, Vermont, or Massachusetts?

I had free oil changes for the first year when I bought my truck. I still changed it and will continue to do it myself. IF I knew their ace mechanic were doing it, I might consider it but I can do it faster than it would take to make the appointment and wait around to get it done. Besides, I enjoy working on my truck.
My daily job requires a lot of thought. Working on my truck is a nice break for me.

I will admit that I don't like the thought of all those jugs ending up in the dump. I give the old oil to a friend with an oil burning furnace in his shop. Before that, I'd take it to Autozone or some other recycle center.

I would love to find someone that bought oil in bulk that would sell it to me in my own jug....

i've been to all of those, but no. my trash company will take most anything... although they do charge $30 to take an appliance. Craigslist will take it for free in 12 minutes.
