It began this morning when I started my truck to go to work. I have an 2006 Tacoma 4.0L. When idling or accelerating, my engine is making a high pitched whine, almost sounds like I have a supercharger. When I left work, my truck had a little trouble turning over. When I pulled into my driveway, I attempted to start my truck again. It sounded extremely labored, but started. Any ideas or suggestions?!?

Alternator would be my first guess. I would check the engine-driven accessories, everything with a belt and pulley on it. Whining is often the alternator. Power steering tends to growl. Water pumps squeal. AC and smog pumps make different noises.

Thank you Mike. Luckily I'm off tomorrow through Sunday. Your info gives me somewhere to start. I appreciate the help.

Probably one of the belt idler or tensioner pulley bearings, but alternator is a possibility too.

Either alternator or the wife/ gf had a supercharger installed over night.
