My wife noticed an engine tick two days ago after starting the Engine. Even with new hearing aids, I couldn't hear it. So I took it to my mechanic today and he diagnosed it to the high pressure fuel pump.

He then pulled up a service bulletin on his computer, T-SB-0016-18 and printed it out for me and told me to call Toyota to see about a free replacement.

I did, if the issue is the fuel pump, they are going to replace it for free. If it's not the fuel pump, I'm out $148 diagnostic fee.

If it is the pump, and they replace it for free, I think I'll give the $148 to my mechanic!

Just wanted to give everyone a head's up on a non-recall, no-warranty free repair from Toyota.

You should be able to pull up your VIN and see if your vehicle has an active recall on it.

Think you have a honest mechanic. A rare find now a days . Hold on to bulletin and take it to Toyota when it gets worse. Good luck

The new one is going to do it too. They all do, especially if you use ethanol gas.

This problem has existed with the HPFP from way back in 2012 in the FRS and other cars in their lineup. My 2016 tacoma started doing it within 6 months. A lot of people will mix an occasional tank of non-ethanol fuel in to lubricate the pump.

We have a different definition of scientific evidence.

Just had mine replaced also. 2017 SR 4X4 with 120,xxx miles. Dealer replaced every pulley I had trying to diagnose, even with me telling them about the TSB on the HPFP.

In lieu of scientific evidence, even though we're all scientists in our own way here, how about I quote the last line of the service bulletin repair procedure? Step 4 of T-SB-0016-18 (after the repair is completed) states,

"Confirm that the chirping noise is reduced."

The inference I get from step 4 is that there will still be a chirping noise, just harder to hear.

    Thanks all.

My taco is not my daily and it is tuned so it gets ethanol free fuel. After many thousands of miles of testing and travel across the country I can confirm that there is no chirp with ethanol free fuel. But when I'm on the road and the corn-syrup has to hit the tank boy does she start chirping a symphony.

Most of us should be covered with the HPFP extended warranty due to fuel leak so if we ever need a replacement hopefully the new pumps aren't atrociously loud. I've never had a vehicle that's exhibited this characteristic. Taco is great otherwise.

While driving below 60 mph I notice a slight hesitation almost sputtering slightly not sure if anyone else feels this. Doesn’t do it at higher speeds than 50+ or lower speed lower than 40? Any suggestions?

Torque converter shudder. Well known issue on a lot of toyotas. They lock the torque converter around 1500 RPM to save more fuel.

Got this problem on my 3rd gen tacoma and on a 6th gen camry I daily. The lady's 7th gen camry does not have this problem. I just deal with it by driving in sport mode all the time and keeping the RPM where I want it. These transmissions are stout and they work well with directed shifting.

I don't mind it but can understand how it would this would be an annoyance to most people.

S-mode or S-mode and ECT mode at the same time. Experiment with it to find your sweet spot. Occasionally I use both at the same time when I need to hold gears longer for the extra giddy-up.

Check out an app called pure gas and it will show you stations that have ethanol free. I'd find the most reputable station franchise in your area that carries it and go there.

I use ethanol blend all the time. Hard to find gas without it, but I haven’t looked. Just need to buy the regular cheap gas nothing special needed. My truck runs just fine. Haven’t heard these chips going on 91K.
