I've got 34500kms on my Tacoma, it always had a slight hissing coming from tank area, thought it was normal, could still very well be but since about 28000kms it's been ticking louder at idle on passenger side, I brought it for second oil change at the dealer and told them about it, they told me it was the high pressure fuel pump and they will replace it, they said they've never seen, or done it before which to me is a lil scary lol first oil change I got by them I added a quart of oil when I heard ticking at idle the next day while out of town hunting and I hate that I can't bring it in myself or trust them to let someone who knows how to drive standard, when he took it into the parking lot after the oil change he shifted into 2nd without letting off the gass and not being gentle with the clutch made a couple loud caclunks man oh man, anyways my question really is who has had this problem and what is actually the issue? The pump simply failing making noise? Over pressurizing? Sucking air? What is causing it to fail? image.jpg

The period(.) key on your keyboard is on the bottom right down below the "L" key. Learn to use it.

Edited to appease the panty-sniffing sissies

I don't specifically know Toyota high pressure pumps but I'm familiar with BMW and Fords. Both use a steel return spring that breaks inside of the pump and cause unusual or loud noise. Most of the time though the pump doesn't maintain full pressure either.

Never do maintenance on my own trucks? Excuse me who the hell are you to tell me what I can and Can not do? Once my warrantee is over the only person to touch it will be me. Save your smart ass coments. I build, repair & maintain everything I own and then some. so you're saying I should of drove it approx 300km to the dealer with nothing showing on the dip stick, so he could top it off for me? Give your head a shake!

I have mostly been running it on 87 octane from Esso. like it sais to use in the manual. Might be why? Up to 10% ethanol could be The problem? Hate that shit, eats away at rubber and brass in older carbs.

switching brands will do nothing for you. Running an occasional tank of non-ethanol through it will lubricate the pump correctly. It's been proven in the FRS/BRZ which uses the same injection technology from Toyota and that car has been out since 2013.

Why would they give a 3cent per litre esso gas card at ur first service and specifically say to run on 87 octane in the manual if it does contain ethanol and because of that doesn't lubricate the fuel pump like it should? Something needs to be redesigned or specified. Other than the engine not gaining my trust too quickly I've been enjoying the truck it's self so far. Diesel swap when that 3.5 takes a shit, if it's off warrantee lol

I noticed this slightly yesterday. Been running 10% ethanol since new. Now at 5K miles. Anyone use a fuel additive meant to increase lubricity? Marvel mystery oil or the like?

The high pressure fuel pump is located on the passenger side of the engine. The low pressure pump is in the fuel tank. Maybe it's the low pressure relief valve in the fuel tank, although the fuel tank is closer to driver's side?? Or maybe something malfunctioning with the EVAP canister pump/system? That seems more likely if you're hearing a hissing.

By the way, first post, bought a 2017 OR in November. Best tens of thousands of dollars I've ever spent!
