It that the maintenance light or the check engine light? The maintenance light comes on after a set number of miles to remind you to do an oil change. So it could just be a coincidence...

Explain what you mean by this. When on the highway, does moving the lever from D to 4 cause it to shift gears? Yes or no.

to me it really sounds like O/D is not working, obviously something transmission related. i don't think it would be the rear end unless they put some crazy gears in there when they replaced it, which is probably unlikely.

I say check all of the electrical connections first, ensure they're all secured, then go to an Auto Parts store of your choice (Autozone or O'Reily's) to get the code pulled for the check engine light. When removing the driveshaft from the transmission, a slight amount of transmission fluid comes out. Did they refill it with another type of ATF fluid to your knowledge? Toyota WS fluid is the only type this transmission accepts. It shouldn't make that much of a difference unless they accidentally drained the transmission and put the wrong type of fluid back in.

    Reserected from the dead.
I would think the first thing to do would be to take it to the guys that " fixed" it. They were the last ones to have their hands on it.

    This will start some fires:

Actually any Dexron VI ATF would be fine, even Walmart's SuperTech Dexron VI (it's made by Citgo)--though I do not believe I would use it...

I'm just hoping the techs where the diff work was performed new about the WS fluid. I realize there are compatible options, but Toyota recommends the WS. I hope they didn't put just any off the shelf ATF in there.

FINALLY got my truck back, was in the shop 18 days, warranty covered everything. The mechanic said the code was P 0776, That is the solenoid right? If it is not too difficult can someone explain how a bad solenoid can ruin a transmission? The warranty company had them drop the pan to find out exactly what was wrong and he said the linkage from 3rd to 4th gear was busted. So now have a new transmission, and triple checked the differential and it is the correct one.

Wow, good to hear everything worked out for you! Maybe not the result you were expecting but hey, now you have a brand new transmission in a 7 year old truck!

bad solenoid won't let you shift gears causing heat issues and damage internal materials. As poster on page 1 specified ecu puts the vehicle in limp mode to prevent more damage to internals. On my Accord when this happened the drive icon "D" on my display notified me of this with flashing D. Codes read on mine 2 shift solenoids were stuck.

Manual trans swap, problem solved :D

Glad it got figured out and even better that it was covered under warranty, did you have an aftermarket warranty on your truck or?
