Well im about to graduate from HS in June hopefully and i've got a couple questions. I want to go to Clemson for Computer Science as I have a intrest in the computing field. At the same time though, I want to go into Law Enforcement and possibly the FBI in the Future working as a Computer Network Specialist or a Computer Engineer. I really want to go into the LE Field but I do not know exactly where I want to go after college. Law Enforcement or Industrial? o_O Hoping some LEO and Computer related TW members could chime in and point me in some directions. Thanks

    Cam.

This is a repost. I posted it in the wrong place .-. just realized that after about a week or so.

Go into the military, and then use the GI bill to go to college. Then talk to your local law enforcement agencies. They crave people will combat expierence and an AS in Public Safety.

And since your 17 i would look into the DEP.

God i sound like a frekin' recruiter.

Also you dont know if you want to go into the law enforcement field, or the industrial yet you have a law enforcement badge as: future career... sounds like you have your mind made up.

DEP? I thought you didn't need military experience although it is a good boost and would look good. I really had my mind on going to college right after high school, joining a Department afterwards and gain experience and take classes on the side till i got enough experience and age(23) to apply for the FBI Special Agent Title.

You could do guard or reserve and go to college...they'll give you less money for school though

Delayed Entry Program, get your MOS and shit all contracted and squared away. Most PD's now REQUIRE a 2 year degree Or military experience. And no FBI district is gonna turn you loose at 23 as a special agent...But the DEA has some pretty cool benefits.

There are 2 schools of thought on the military vs college.

If you have military experience, that's great, no one will ever hold that against you.

If you don't but you have college and a clean record and great scores, then that's just as good.

If you want to go to college, by all means, DO IT!! But if you do, keep your nose fucking clean, don't do stupid shit, get in trouble and eff around. Keep excellent grades, an excellent record and do your research on what you want. Talk to the people at the job fairs held by your college.

If you go the military route, do the research there too, get into something that you WANT, and that will be compatible on the outside. And take advantage of the tuition assistance while you're in. DEP is the delayed entry program.

You are right there. Wishful thinking i suppose. What benefits do the DEA offers?

Ahh. Just wanted to know if i could go thorough my 4-year school first then jump in LE. Could i be in LE part-time while im in college or is that not possible?

I do not think so, but many sheriff's departments have a volunteer program where you might get a car (not take home) where you just service minor traffic accidents and stuff of that nature. This is a good starter if you want to work for that department, plus it looks good on any resume.

Heres a picture of a deputy sheriff and two citizen volunteers next to him from my local SO. In the back is the type of vehicle they are issued, usually a minivan, ford ranger, or impala.

Ha yeah, but we all gotta start somewhere. Minivan now-charger later. You would be in it till you achieve a minimum of a law enforcement certificate from a community college, or until you get offered a spot at its police academy.

That certificate would be good at any academy I apply to correct?

I have this thing about the military and I would like to avoid the military if i can.

I would say it would be good about 70% of the time. The certificate is probably 4g,-6 college classes, so its a "lesser associates" degree.

Just like anything, the more education the more doors are opened to you.

Not really helping a whole lot, but just to let you know, the law enforcement badge thing for your avatar is usually reserved for actual LEO's. But I am also a high school student looking to be a LEO after college, so I hope we both succeed in our endeavors.

    Good luck.

Ahh. i was unaware of this. Ill remove it in a bit. I wish you the best in becoming a LEO as well. I've always felt that i'd be good sitting in front of a computer all day but with the world the way it is, I feel like LE is right for me. It would be something new every single day and thats something I could get used to.

go to school...then become a cop, they will give you training on computers. Friend of mine in the dept. just got a computer forensics job here. They pull all sorts of illegal crap off of computers that people thought they erased. You need to know how to do it with a chain of evidence and legally so it won't get thrown out of court. Believe it or not everyone keeps track of stuff on computers and cell phones from drug dealers to other types of criminals. It is a growing field. for me it is just easier to take a bite outta crime...

Alright, here ya go. I am currently in a police academy at a college. Its 41 credits, gives me basic police certification in the state of CO, no guaranteed job afterward. Certain departments send their recruits to academies put on by other departments, the State Troopers are sponsored by a college giving you 54 credits towards an associates degree. Most agencies require you to do a certain number of hours of continuing education once you get hired. Some, not all agencies ask that you have either an associates degree or a bachelors degree. Like I said, SOME! Its all up to the agency to decide that.

To work in LE as someone under 21 you have to either be an intern or volunteer.

If you want to stay away from the military, then do that and get your four years college. You will be able to get a job almost anywhere with a 4 year degree. As prior military, prior MP and a graduate of the FLETC Uniformed Basic Police Training Program, I will not push military. Certain agencies have programs that you can do internships or training programs at the FLETC with DEA, ATF, etc and you get the training you need there. These programs are usually self cost but you live on the academy grounds.

There are options out there for you, explore them. Call around to your agencies, talk to the training officers, contact the local offices of the feds that are close to you, talk to a federal agency recruiter...especially at the agencies you want to get into, ask for their advice...you'll learn a lot from asking them questions.

And, do a few ride alongs, make sure LE is something you want to do. In the academy here, they told us "Agencies hire cops, if you're not a cop, you shouldn't be in this career." Make sure you are cop. By that I mean, that you can take the stress, handle the issues, make the calls, have the ethics, morals, and can live the lifestyle. Make sure that its the career for you.

Alright. Since i wont be living where i am in the next year ill have to hold off on the recruitment questioning until i get to my new area of residence. I could call the Federal Agency once i do get up there and if i have further inquires ill address them then and there.

Internship/Volunteer looks like my best bet. It'll give me a glimpse into the world of LE and if I decide that i dont want to do that then i can just continue my degree as normal and go into the industrial computing field.

As far as training goes i'd rather do it after college and when i get into a academy. Thank you for your help. All the info i've been receiving is really clearing some things up for me.
