Hi everyone, so my truck will randomly get the high transmission fluid temp and will shut down. I recently changed the fuel pump at the dealership and thought it was going to fix the problem. (They had informed me it would) But it didn’t. Any thoughts on this? Or what to do exactly? I am no where near a mechanic and I hate going to them because they take advantage that I don’t know

Why did they think replacing the fuel pump was going to fix high transmission temp? How many miles on it? Has the fluid been changed before? Have you had a look at the trans cooler (If equipped) to make sure its not dirty or damaged and restricting airflow?

Has your transmission fluid level ever been checked or changed? Low fluid or old fluid can cause friction and higher temps.
Any modifications to your exhaust pipes? Some Y-Pipe exhaust pipes re-route under the transmission pan.
Do you have a V6 or 4 cylinder?
When does your truck shut down (are you towing up steep hills)?
Lastly, find a new dealer that knows a new fuel pump will not lower transmission fluid temperature.

How was it determined that you are experiencing high transmission fluid temperature? Are you towing? Do you have large tires e.g., 35’s? Is the truck still stock?

It says "transmission over temp" on the display when it goes into limp mode and then shuts down as soon as you stop.

My wife did it to her Rav4 last year. She was driving in S3 (or maybe S4, I can't recall) at highway speeds for about 45 mins, and was probably doing 90+

@dmbtacogrl11 . Try replacing crankshaft position sensor . It’s a known issue with 2016 snd dome 2017 models . It’s easy and cheap

Ask the mechanic to check for vacuum leaks and air leaks, especially around the intake. Usually this is easily diagnosed with a smoke machine.

I have a Volant aftermarket intake and the intake tube kept slipping off a silicone coupler on the trail. Every time it happens, I get the transmission overheat warning on the gauge cluster screen and the engine stalls out. This was very consistent (like 3 times in an hour). There's no direct relation between a vacuum leak and hotter transmission fluid temps, so it's probably just a quirk of the ECM software logic. My problem was eventually solved with a replacement silicone coupler.

Looking at your post history, it may be related to your other issue: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2017-tacoma-sport-4wd.771073/

Any codes? Could be the transmission atf sensor is getting shorted out. But would need codes and a way to monitor off of that PID to know for certain.

Early models with faulty cps goes to limp mode then high trans temp is lit up.

I call it a faulty crankshaft position sensor . OP it’s a cheap part. Nothing to lose except a few dollars . Benefit outweighs the risk

It's a 3rd gen Tacoma problem. Try a Google search or search function here. Plenty of threads about it.

Being a 17' its probably due for a Trans service anyhow. Id take it to the dealership and have them check the fluid and exchange if necessary.

I’m a software guy, so I am very familiar with bugs in error handling that lead to misleading error messages. It’s one of my pet peeves that I often try to drill young developers on.

I guess these things happen when you do copy/pasta development.

I think it’s more due to lack in faith in Murphy’s Law. :)
