Because in order to do that you have to cut the case, and since it's constantly charges the battery it overheats very easily. These things heat up bad enough as it is running off just the battery.

With what I linked it's long enough for me to run it to a 12v socket in the truck. And it creates absolutely no heat since it's being powered by a separate source, the truck.

Ahh good information. How much was it?

I was looking at the Session but there's no way to swap batteries or charge it while using so I may have to drop more money than I wanted. That's another reason for the tablet. It'll be mounted and I can bluetooth the camera to it for monitoring. I'll probably pick up one of those OBDII dongles for the Torque app.

What type of GPS software do you use. I was thinking about getting some type of off roading GPS, but my iPhone 6 will likely work just fine. Heck...it may work better.

I'm going to be using Backcountry Navigator app on the tablet. I've never used it. This will be my first trip using it. Your iPhone will work as long as you can keep cell signal. The reason I bought the tablet was because it actually has a WAAS chip in it. So it can act as GPS without phone or internet signal (tablet is Wi-Fi only) as long as you have the maps downloaded before hand.

I've read that these apps will work without cell signal on the iPhone. It just uses your GPS, but obviously you would have to download the appropriate map before hand. I've heard the back country was good.

I'll be using both Backcountry navigator and Google Maps. Both will have the area maps downloaded.

You're right. I remember now that all iOS products that are data capable have GPS that works without signal. It's the non-data capable iPads and iPods that don't. If I was going to be using my iPhone is use LeadNav. It's like $20 but looks promising. I just want the bigger screen of the tablet since like I said before, it'll also be used for GoPro Bluetooth controls and the Torque app.

I'll look into that one. I've heard GPS kit and Gaia GPS is good too.

It's got a 10' cord. Should be plenty of length to mount outside the cab.

Wouldn't reach to the rear end to mount it on the tailgate would it? I would feel weird about stringing a cord from the cab to the camera if I'm in a tree-heavy area

If you want it on the tailgate I guess you could run it through the back window. But you'd definitely need a usb extension.

Think I've decided to just get the GoPro Hero+. I like the price and it has everything I need and nothing I don't. I'd like the Hero+LCD but I'll never be using it when I won't have my phone or tablet around to Bluetooth to it for settings and playback so I don't think it's worth the extra $100.

I use the Bluetooth to get it set up, but then in turn it off because it is a power hog

Actually, that one doesn't have replaceable batteries. But I can get the Hero3+ Silver with an extra battery and a dual charger for $50 more. I don't plan to leave the Wi-Fi on all the time. Just to get it setup and make sure I like the placement.
