I wonder if some folks get poor mileage in part too, to oxygenated fuel in their area over the winter. ? I don't know why my mileage suffered so much on my recent flatlander trip, I even have the manual and used the cruise control.

I've gotten anywhere from 13-21 MPG. Ive tried both cruise on and off, different speeds, different fuels and nothing seems to get me a consistent result. A couple weeks ago, I made the same 200 mile trip, 3 times. I got 20.4, 19.6, 16.9. Drove the same each time (cruise set at 73).

Most overrated vehicle in the United States . I had a 2012 Rubicon Unlimited . For the money I spent on it it was one of the worst vehicles I've ever owned . It looked really cool but it was very uncomfortable and of poor quality . This is why you see a ton of jeeps traded in with hardly any mileage on them in brand-new condition at dealer lots.

I'm pretty sure the good MPG numbers have to do with flat level elevation. If one were climbing hills and mountain grades, I'm sure the number would drastically drop.

its easy to get 20+ on mostly flat driving. Around my town I can easily get between 21-23mpg all day long as its mostly flat. But my drive to work has alot of hills and I average about 17-18.5
Most of the time people post these high numbers but dont mention the fact that its all flat lands they are driving on.

I took a trip to SLC yesterday with the goal to get the best mpg I could while still maintaining the speed limit (75-80). I left cruise control off and when I needed a little more power to maintain speed I would bump the throttle with my big toe to get the truck to shift to 5th gear. It really kills your mileage if you let the truck drop all the way to 4th and it's running at 5,000 rpms.
My trip was from Mountain View Wyoming to SLC for the day then back home to Wyoming. For a very brief moment my avg mpg was at 21.5. On my way home it went from 21.5 down below 20. I got it to 20.0 as I pulled into my driveway.

My truck is 2WD AND I DID STATE that my trip was mostly flat. My point in this post is not that every geography will get this rather high mileage. My point is that I allowed my transmission to learn my driving habits of gradual acceleration, and driving no faster than 70, and not using cruise control during the learning phase so that I could keep the transmission in the highest gear.

The result was that I can now use the cruise and on small grades, it downshifts to 5th, whereas before it would downshift several times in an effort to quickly resume the preset speed.

This, combined with keeping the tach below 2000 improved my mileage

When I first got my truck I was averaging around 19-20mpg. Switching to premium gas I now average around 21 consistently over ~1500 miles. With that said driving style is 90% of mpg variance. I let my buddy borrow my truck for 2 days while he was moving and he averaged 17mpg. This is living in the Seattle area with plenty of hills.

I live in upstate New York, and the winter fuel has always decreased my gas mileage. I also should add, tires play much more of a role than people realize. On my last truck, a 2010 4Runner, I started off with Dunlop tires, and I got great gas mileage. My next set were Yokohama tires, and my mileage went down by almost 3 miles a gallon. These weren't aggressive tires, either. Now on my Gen 3 Tacoma, I have the stock Toyo tires, and my mileage is great, just as good as the original poster's mileage. Like him, I'm also not having any issues with the transmission. But I do have to wonder if some of the people getting worse gas mileage have tires that are contributing to it.

I agree about tires and size also. One thing that influenced my past decisions and this was only for my '07 Civic, I would look at rolling resistance on a tire. If I was going with a commuter car, I wanted great gas mileage. But, like many folks, gas mileage or other reasons may not have been why they bought a Taco.

GasMileage.jpg 50 mile drive each way to work daily. I can repeat this mileage by driving like Ms. Daisy (55 - 60mph) on most days. I live in hilly area not flattened by glaciers so average is near 23mpg as shown on fuely. Big toe in carbinator can be seen in mileage of center columns.

Guess I have to read up on the instructions, we can bring up a graph on the screen like you show or can you link a cell phone with applicable app? Where is a six year old when you need them?

The graph he is showing is only representative of when he decides to hit the "Update" button. I update mine on average every 3 weeks since I've taken delivery whereas he appears to have hit Update after one or two favorable drives on front and back end, then in the middle he updated every week. He has 7 fuel ups in Fuelly, which is a better representation of fuel economy on someone's vehicle but that is ONLY if they actually input the data correctly. If you go look at fuelly right now the average for the 2016 with 3.5L is under 19mpg. Yes some people are getting higher than that and also some lower but most drivers under normal driving conditions are getting just under 19mpg.

It depends a lot on speed, too. I actually get my best mileage when driving in the mountains on two lane roads. Generally, those roads keeps me in the 45-55 MPH range. I'll get 17-19 MPG on the way up and 30+ on the way down. It's not uncommon for me to get 23-24 MPG in those situations round trip.

I get my best mileage around 55 - 60, steady speed, flat land. I went on a trip and decided to experiment with fuel economy. I fueled up, drove 70 miles with the cruise set at 75 mph on fairly level interstate. I filled up when I got there and checked fuel economy ... got 18.9 mpg. On the way back, I set the cruise at 60 and fueled up again when I got back and got 25.6 mpg. Both figures were also confirmed within a couple 10ths with the dash computer.

ive found that if you shift too low it dogs the transmission and your mileage gets worse.
