CA's got the highest elevation in the contiguous US, Mt Whitney. 14,500ft give or take. Too bad we can't drive up it though.

And if you are there on 2 days of the year the gate is open you can drive to the highest road in the US. 14,264 feet. I learned that, here on TW, a couple of years ago after I drove to the same spot. The gate was unfortunately closed for me too.

Unfortunately they canceled the open gate days this year due to the pandemic. I'm keeping an eye on their page to see if that'll happen next year.

My understanding is that even on open days, you still can't drive to the top, just to the research station at ~12500 ft. But that still shaves 2 miles off the hike or bike ride to the summit.

damnit, time to start checking off some peaks. wyoming is a gnarly 5-6 day round trip trek to 13,805...

edit: colorado looks annoyingly easy, its a class 2-3 day hike...MT looks like a fun long weekend with class 4/low 5, ive done Idaho, UT looks like a boring class 2-3 hike for 23 miles...

double edit: i forgot ive done oregon too! nice. i skiied from the top of hood in the spring 5? years ago...worst skiing ever. boiler plate ice. almost died sliding into a dormant volcanic crater

im gonna have all my worthwhile surrounding states knocked out by next summer i hope lol. fun challenge

meanwhile in nebraska...i live at 6200 lol

Hmmm. Googling around the internets I found White Mountain Research Center who runs the lab up there.

So the "General Public" isn't allowed to drive all the way up.

That's two states down. Now who's driving to the top of Denali?

Silver Canyon is open to the public. The research station is not. Though they do open once a year for tours—or they used to.

Your not missing much going to highest point in Nebraska maybe some cows and just slightly better than the highest point in Kansas.

Mt Elbert is way easier than Whitney.

Jeebus. I thought Rhode island was pathetic. It is. But this is an honorable mention.

Knocked off south dakota in september. More by chance, as we happen to be driving through the area. It was actually a pretty cool spot to hike to. Turns out, the highest point is SD is the highest point between the rockies and pyrenes mtns in france! The black hills are a pretty sweet little spot

I had my truck all the way up to the infamous highest point in Kansas last summer.
Unfortunately it's behind me in the picture I took:
    Mt Sunflower.jpg

As far as state highpointing is concerned, so far I've checked off South Dakota, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. (But the truck has only been to the top of Kansas).

The highest elevation my taco has been to is the top of Cottonwood Pass in Colorado at 12,126' but I didn't take any photos because it was a paved road and didn't seem photo worthy at the time.
The highest photo I have of my truck is at the top of Weston Pass at 11,921'

Today I did some not many have done, I summited 3 states with my Tacoma.

    Mt. Davis, Pennsylvania
    52F8A111-50A7-4187-B09C-7031FA23698F.jpg

    Hoye Crest, Maryland
    92E0E47E-150E-4B73-B8E1-E2379643C839.jpg

    Spruce Knob, West Virginia
    5763D375-5D41-49ED-8CA1-92EAD5253BDC.jpg

Two states paved to the top, one required 4WD. And the combined elevation of the 3 barely adding up to more than the 11,259 the BRWNTRD has reached in California.

A few years ago I rode to the top of a pass in Ecuador, on a major highway, in a Hyundai minivan. 13550’. No Tacoma’s there, but lots of diesel Hilux.
