is it just me or does anyone else seem to have an issue with rolling backwards when starting on a hill. I have an automatic transmission and I can be on the slightest grade not even a hill and the truck will not hold it self. If I let it go to see if it is just hesitating before initiating it ( which is contradicitve to the amenity ) it will even kick in traction control and what not from sensing the rolling backwards. I drive 2 different Cummins for work. One automatic and one 6 speed and with Our 25’ or 35 ‘ trailer loaded with steel they have no issue with rolling backwards from a start on hills. Cheers

By coincidence, I just posted a thread related to hill assist as well, but my questions were for offroading on steep inclines. In town, I have never had it kick in when on slight inclines, but a slight incline in Oregon might been differently defined than a slight incline in Nebraska. If definition is not different, then it does seem like there might be something off, unless you are hauling a bunch of weight. My understanding is that the only thing keeping the truck from rolling backwards is engine torque. So if you are carrying/hauling a lot of weight, that might be enough to cause hill assist to engage.

Your reference to diesel full size trucks is apples to oranges. Engine torque in different universes.

You sure the trac control light isnt coming on indicating Hill Assist?

    From the manual-

◆ Hill-start assist control (if equipped) Helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when starting on an incline or slippery slope The slip indicator light will flash while the TRAC/VSC/Trailer Sway Control/hill-start assist control* systems are operating. *: If equipped with Multi-terrain Select/ Crawl Control.

Nothing to do with the torque it is the hill assist. Even with the manual dodge there is resistance when letting clutch out to start going. Almost like the e brake is engaged if you will and then it opens up. Kind of weird to get used to at first. And as far as weight I have a cap on my bed that’s it.

Just like both of you guys have posted a thread about this, there is at least one large thread that I know of about the exact same issue. Put the same terminology in the search area and see if you can find it.

This has definitely been an issue for some other people also.

It's normal for the offroad models. The other models hold just fine on inclines

@Pine State, Do you know why it is that the off road models act this way? Thanks in advance for the replies. Cheers

It's meant to reduce the rearward momentum so you dont slide and can control yourself. Useful on slippery slopes such as snow and loose dirt/gravel. I believe its intended for offroad use primarily.

I have the OR and it works great. You have to hold the brakes for a few seconds to activate it. If you're on a hill and go from reverse to drive real fast without holding the brakes, you will roll back and the maracas will activate.

So my 2019 4x4 or trd automatic goes backwards and makes all sorts of racke . So this is normal based on that video. So it really isn't a hill holder like we have gotten used to meaning when we say hill start assist. Its merely a mechanism to slow the roll back. Is that right? I did try 4hi and 4lo in same hil . 4lo held the hill for a long time and there was no hac intervention. So that means on my hill, 4lo works. No once I get it to mountain on the gravel road and ever have to stop, I wonder what it will do. I usually go up that in 4h . But if I have to stop for a dog or stick, rollback probably? I guess the or models all roll back because of some interaction with crawl control and Toyota could not make it work otherwise or cheaply?

i believe i have tried that yesterday with no luck.

so my questions to clear up what i have read on here:

    1) which models have it?
my OR 4x4 TRD automatic trans is SUPPOSED to have it based on what i have read but then others say they have it and the truck doesn't roll back.
i have read that since i have an OR with crawl control, that it doesn't quite work like a normal hill start assist. i'd love to get something from toyota on this. The manual really doesnt clear this up.
    2) if you have it, how does it work? does it actually let you roll back just slower than if it wasn't there? that's what the video shows.

I can't comment on how it works in the AT, but in my MT it literally holds the brakes on electronically. It releases once you start pressing the gas pedal.
