mine does not do that. at all. i have had cars with what they call "hill start assist" and it does as you state. holds it on the hill till you hit gas or about2-3 seconds whichever comes first.

what i have and alot of others seem to have with the OFFROAD 4x4 models with automatic at least, makes alot of noise and lets you roll back. I have not just let it roll to see what happens as it's sort of embarrassing in the driveway- like i have a broke truck or something. LOL. I will say i tried crawl control as well in the same spot and the lowest setting causing it to jerk and make all kinds of buzzing and beeping noises. setting 3 seems to smooth it out.. i guess that's tied to it trying to maintain a certain speed and setting 1 or 2 is considered too fast for the hill so it uses the abs. 3 or higher is faster so it doesn't interfere/slow as much.

    not complaining really, just observing.

Posting to clarify the question and because I have the same issue.
No. The Tacoma, no matter which model, does not come with hill assist/brake hold. Unlike any other car at half the cost, the Tacoma doesn’t do anything to hold your position between the time you move your foot between brake and accelerator on a hill.
All attempts in this thread and at least two others I’ve searched side step the question and viable concern. Works as designed? No. It doesn’t even consider the issue.
Not only is it a safety issue, but the ensuing ABS racket that is made is entirely unnecessary and ridiculous. Very disappointing. A base model Jetta offers this as standard equipment but it doesn’t exist on a new 2020 Tacoma (or any before).

It’s apparent the aspects of using two feet for this kind of technical driving is lost.

at first I thought my 2021 TRD OR also had mulfunctioning hill start assist, just couldn't engage, but then out of nowhere it worked. so I figured it's a very delicate control, the key seems to be not release the brake too fast and too much, there's a narrow window where it engages. 1. press down the brake firmly, 2. release the brake (you'll have to practice at various rate), and do not release too much.

My personal question for the thread is about REVERSE hill start control. My driveway is a pretty steep hill and i want to back into/onto it, it was torture, combined with the strange power band/delayed gas pedal response, I'm either rolling forward or shooting backwards.
