Hi tacoma experts and knowledgeable owners. Checking out my new 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road. I was checking out the hill start assist control. Anyway, stopped on an incline and sure enough, the tacoma did not move backwards when I took my foot off the brake...great feature. But in a little over 3 to 4 seconds, the tacoma started to move backwards slowly and my skid indicator icon appeared in yellow on my tachometer and then made a very strange, and to me a very disturbing noise and then suddenly stopped after a loud clunk. I did not know what to think about this...so I waited a few more seconds and the same thing happened. I then put on the gas and continued uphill and the skid indicator icon went away and all seemed to be normal. Is this a problem or is it just a safety feature and normal? What make the noises? Is it a function of the brake system or the transmission. I hope I caused no harm to my buddy. Thank you in advance.

    Are you lost???o_O

It's normal. I believe it's the brake system, that makes the noise. Specifically the ABS(maybe?) I'm sure there is someone smarter on here that can give you a more detailed explanation

Well, I thought my 2017 TRD Sport had Hill Assist. Stopped on a hill...took my foot off the brake...she just rolled back down the hill. Perplexed and disappointed.

It's got a cop motor, a 440-cubic-inch plant. It's got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas.
Perhaps hill assist is only for manuals. My last sports car had it. Theres really no need in an automatic since theres only two pedals. In a manual it keeps you from having to use the e-brake. The loud crunching noises are the abs, something about rolling backwards in drive upsets it.

I have hill start assist on my '16 sport auto, and have had it in previous vehicles. It's normal for it to disengage after 3-4 seconds of your foot being off the brake pedal.

Interesting. I wonder if it comes with tech/premium or what? I have a pretty steep driveway and have never noticed it on mine.

Hill start assist will disengage after a few seconds with your foot not on the brake. Same with the GTI I used to have.

Mine (Auto ORD) does the same when I'm on a steep hill– especially in gravel.

It got my head scratching the first time. It's one of the Driving Assist Systems... exactly what I don't know.

Thanks to all of my fellow tacoma owners and your comments on my hill start assist control feature and associated noises on my 2017 trd off road. You are so kind to relieve a little anxiety on my part. This is a great forum and I am so happy to be part of it.

I just bought a 2017 TRD Off Road two weeks ago and have put on about 800 miles on it so far. I just read your initial post and what you explained that you are experiencing is EXACTLY what I am experiencing with my Tacoma...word for word! At first I was thinking, "What the hell!" when I first experienced this, but after reading up on it, it sounds like it's a normal function and feature. I have to say however, that the Hill Start Assist on my truck seems to be pretty sensitive and activates on inclines that to me do not seem steep enough to have to activate the system but it does. I wonder if there is a way to make the system not so sensitive?

Below are some pic's of my ride...

I too just experienced this strange noise on my 2018 TRD Off Road auto. I’m not sure why it has this feature as it only holds the truck from
coasting backwards for a few seconds.
It’s alarming to hear it for the first time and I was thinking of driving directly to the dealer before I read this.

The Manual Off Road and Pro do not have it but the Automatics do.

:rofl:If you think that sounds bad, you obviously haven’t tried the crawl control yet!:bananadance:

But don’t worry, it is normal for the truck.

Crawl control sounds like the truck is going to self destruct....

Just experienced this too in an trdOR at. Trac control light blinks and the brakes sound a lot like they do in crawl control for a few seconds. I've had hill start assist in other cars that were completely silent, this is a bizarre implementation

Hello again and thanks for your replies to the thread I started in 10-2016 concerning the Hill Start Assist. Just to let you know that I have had no problems associated to this feature since then...so I do believe that the feature and my concerns is normal for this feature. Thanks again for your assistance...great forum.

Whew! I just experienced this as well in my PRO coming up my driveway. I wanted to test the hill assist out, took my foot off the brake, it rolled back slowly for a few seconds and then grinding sounds started. I pressed on the gas and it still did it for 1-2 seconds. Such an odd sound. In other cars, like my previous WRX STI's, this sound would be grinding gears. It's odd this is normal.
