Interesting ... I thought that was for trucks with manual trannys. Don't get why you would need it with an auto?? With M/T it's extremely handy. Lowers stress of rolling back when some smuck just pulled up behind me to where I can't see the car much at all and I'm on a hill. Happens all the time here where I live. I should have a bumper sticker - "truck rolls back on hills when stopped" and another one with :luvya::brianr:

No BRO-ness to speak of... Well, except Kbro2's
I get the same noise.... Only on steep hills. Watch your dash.... My traction control light goes ape shit too while it is happening.

Why does it sound like something is breaking all the time? It also lets you roll back a bit too. The hill assist in my old car literally just held the brakes for you if you let off the gas on a hill rather than let you roll backwards and made a bunch of noises.

    Hello guys!

I recently purchased a 17 Tacoma (4x4 off-road with auto trans) and I have the same problems on steep hills. When on a steep hill and I let off the brake to engage the gas the truck rolls backwards (what feels like an uncomfortable amount) to where I feel like I have to lay into the gas pedal to keep it from smashing into the car behind me, immediately followed by the traction slip indicator and the "clicking" noise (sounds like by the pedal assembly). Seems to not feel "right" but I am new to tacomas and automatic transmissions.

Just wanted to see if there was any new insight on this subject matter! The owners manual doesn't explain much about this and the posts in this particular thread seem to be a little on both sides of the problem/solution!

Thank you guys in advance for your time and help!

Totally normal. I had this same concern this past year after purchasing a new '16. The hill assist was new, and at times aggravating, getting use to. But a useful tool nonetheless after the initial concern wore off.

It's kind of weird this feature is automatic when in 2 wheel drive. I wasn't away of this until today. Out just driving around town, I stopped in the street on a pretty steep incline to check out a house that's for sale. When I took my foot off the brake the truck rolled back only a few inches and then I heard this loud noise. I recognized it from off roading in 4x4 both high and lo. I knew nothing was wrong (from the noise) but I didn't know this kicked in while in 2 wheel drive on the pavement. Now I can't scare any of the nieces or nephews by telling them the brakes went out and we're rolling all the way down the hill going backwards.

It's part of traction control from what I understand. If you are stopped on a steep gravel hill and step on the gas, the ABS etc. kicks in and keeps you from spinning. If you are on pavement and roll back quick enough it senses it and does the same thing... only you aren't on the gas yet so it just slows your roll backwards. Silly IMO. It seems like more of a side affect of traction control.

My last car was manual, and the only hill assist I had was blipping the throttle with my right foot while still having my right foot on the break as I started to let the clutch out. I don't understand why this feature is necessary, but I guess I haven't driven a 3rd gen so I don't know!

On steep hills mine is silent..... I have a steep driveway. I'll park it on the slope to get the mail. Jump in, put it in 'D' and go (doesn't roll back and doesn't pop or click)..... that doesn't sound normal.

I have a 16 and it does the same thing on the boat ramp every time whether boat is loaded on the trailer or not.
However i go to load my buddies boat in a 13 tacoma and he has a hill assist button. You press that and no roll back what so ever.

Also now the 2018s are coming out with the hill assist buttons so I’m not sure the difference or if they can be added to the 2016s

So is this really normal? I was on steep hill, let go of the brake and rgrgrgrg. Bad noise and vehicle rolled back. Noise is similar to ABS noise. My other vehicles, this doesn't happen they simply don't roll back. Mine is a new 2018 500 miles.

This is normal on Pro and Off Road trucks as it basically uses the same system as crawl control to get it going forward on steep hills. If you try crawl control you will see it's the same noises. The Sport trucks don't do this.

Totally normal. It freaked me out when it first happened. If I am on a steep incline in traffic and don't want this to happen, I just hold the brake with my left foot and give it gas with right as I let of the brake.

I see this every day. It seems to kick in with about 12 inches of rollback. I take my foot of the brake, I start rolling back, I ease into the gas to accelerate up the hill, right as I'm beginning to slow my rollback and transition into forward motion it happens. Annoying AF.

It's not any more roll back than on a manual transmission.

Oh man. This sucks. I tested it this morning. it rolls back and stops, then rolls more and stops....makes noises. Does anybody know why is this way? Why not just apply the brakes like it works on my jeep, Hyundai and Ford? Any benefit for this system over a system that holds the vehicle for 2 seconds? Additionally what is exactly going on when the HSA is working on a Tacoma OR or Pro? Is it braking and letting go? Please get very technical.

    (h) Hill-start Assist Control
When the vehicle starts off on a steep hill, hill-start assist control detects the backward descent of the
vehicle and effects 4-wheel hydraulic pressure control to reduce the speed of the vehicle.
For a Maximum of 5 seconds after the control starts, fluid pressure is gradually released and the control is
    complete.

Mine does this too. On very steep hills, at say a stop sign, when I take my foot off the break to accelerate I will roll back a few inches, the truck beeps at me, something clicks like mad, and then off I go. I’m pretty sure it’s some combination of hill assist and traction control and I’m fairly certain it’s normal.

Helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when starting on
    an incline or slippery slope
where is this from? That is interesting. It actually senses the backward descent. In other vehicles it detects the incline and it is proactive and avoids the roll back. This systems seems more reactive and works after the vehicle starts rolling back. And honestly it doesn't work very well. To me it shouldn't roll back for 2 seconds. Reading the owners manual that what I get from "Approximately 2 seconds elapse after the brake pedal is released." This is the case for all my other vehicles, they don't roll back until 2 seconds pass by.

It seems that there are 2 different systems.

Thank you for your replies. Now I am confident that my Taco is not going to fall apart on a hill.

Huh, I literally had no idea the truck even had that, I guess because I never let it roll far enough back to engage. I always just use the handbrake on steep hill starts.
