i have never been in a situation where I needed it to help. My issue is I have a thing for driving though snow banks and trying to skid on ice patches. I take a few back or side streets to get to work, and they are never plowed well or wide, thus fun to drive when I remember to shut of the ABS.

That has been shown. In some situations ABS will take longer to stop in slick situations. The arguement is usually that you can remain in control and potentially steer around the problem. Once, trying to come to a stop on ice, our old car never stopped cycling the system where lock up would have helped (<2mph). Making it worse, a first truck was coming from the left. Thankfully, I had my head on straight and just gassed through the intersection before they would have needed to react. A lot of pucker after that.

I have it on my 17OR auto and did the same thing, light stayed on. Dealer said it was on a 13 deg hill, it's normal! I think the damm idle is too low, it rolls back on flat ground! My 03 Taco holds on hills with no brake! Useless.....

It's kind of a crap feature. I believe for at least the automatic ORs, it lets you roll back a few feet before it really kicks in, makes a bunch of noise and then still rolls back. I don't know why they couldn't have made something as easy that just holds the brakes when it senses you're on a hill. My previous car had it and worked without any issues or drama. :notsure:

My SR5 4x4 holds for 3sec on any incline if you stopped fully. Rolling through or a quick stop and go Stop sign didn't engage it. Always worked fine with no noise associated.

Yep they do. It's always on, as long as you remember to depress the brake firmly, not just coast to a stop on a hill.

I've had a couple instances on my driveway where I would stop and then try to move forward and the truck would roll back accompanied by a whole bunch of noises from what sounded like crawl control going off. The traction control light would flash too. There is a bit of an incline but nothing major on my driveway. This is on an automatic OR model. It hasn't happened in traffic yet thankfully.

Whats kind of neat with the hill hold is that if you are stopped nose down and put it in reverse it holds when you let off brake . If in 1st or neutral it will roll.

Tried everything to get it to work, and no help from dealerships and Toyota. I'll 'll be jumping in a 2018 tomorrow to see if it functions properly, if yes I'll be pushing for some type of accommodations based on the money I put down on a defective truck or false advertising if they tell me it's not in that model. This feature is in all levels of the Tacoma based on the brochure handout and operators manual.

No, the Off Road and Pro Manuals do not come with the Hill Holder feature, kinda glad it's not on my truck.

How did you come to the conclusion that the feature specifically omitted from those levels. It is checked off as a standard feature in all Tacomas.

I still have the brochure for my 17 and it says Hill Start Assist for Off Road and Pro Automatic only. I think the reason is because of the Brake Booster and ATrac system.

If you have a Manual Trans too then it's safe to say you do not have it, highly doubt they had it for 16 and then cancelled it. The subject has come up here several times in the past and I don't recall any Manual Off Road or Pros with it, only SR and Sport Manuals and I assume all Automatics.

Finally some one got it. The hill hold feature is not present on MT Offroads or Pros and it does not operate as expected on Auto Offroads or Pros. The only common denominator is the brake booster system on said models. Why exactly it causes the hill hold feature to be non-existent on MTs (explicitly said on spec sheets) and operate strangely on Autos is unknown at this point but it is what it is.

Here is the thread that went into it the most. I recommend reading it all.

I had hill holder on a manual trans Subaru and it was pretty handy, especially off pavement where stick shift and no low-range aren’t very clutch friendly. It’s odd that Toyota doesn’t offer it on MT trucks, as it really doesn’t seem necessary on an AT. And the function is erratic at best, annoying at worst, on my AT TRD OR. On some slopes it seems to confuse ATRAC or auto LSD and just creates a lot of brake chatter as it either partially rolls back or as it starts moving forward.
