That is exactly how the HSA worked on my '12 RAV4. Worked well, no weird noise either.

I wish I could turn this feature off on my 2017 4x4 AT as it works too well when I want to roll back- especially while off-road hill climbing as there are times when I would like to let the truck roll back a few feet while still in drive to get another start over an obstacle like a boulder, shelf or slippery part of the trail ahead. It’s not safe to have to shift into reverse or neutral to back up on a steep hill!

In my sr auto hill start assist works great. Stop on a hill. Let off brake, truck says in place for two seconds. No sounds are made. Makes for easy 1 foot driving. Now that I know how long it holds I just wait the two seconds if I want to roll truck back a bit without putting it in another gear.

If you having trubble taking off and the slip light is flashing I would hit the vsc/TRAC button once to shut off engine traction control and activate Auto Lsd. Then try and pull forward and let the abs work without engine regulation. The engine regulation can almost kill all forward speed, especially if ESC kicks in if your off angle and the wheel is turned.

My truck rolls backwards on hills - it rolls downhill in both directions. The other day I backed up my driveway which is at an incline, I slipped on some ice at the top invoking whichever of the confusing-ass anti-slip features that helps with that, I took my foot off the gas in reverse and it rolled forward a good ways, ended up stalling actually, flashed the high ATF temp screen in the dash. Started it back up, no issues since. I'm a little worried about the high ATF warning because I don't know if that was part of the weird situation or if it was because I drove a good 200 miles that day mostly highway and I have read the warnings of getting ATF fluid checked because some were low.

Do you have an auto or manual? I have the same truck, although mine is auto. I experienced the same thing on up-hill climbs. Rolling back the slip warning comes on and the brake pedal flutters. I took it in and the dealer says they dont know what to do. They said the hill brake is definitely not working. They needed more time which I didnt have. So we will go to a local dealer near home. Ill keep you posted.

I thought TRD OR and PRO dont have hill start assist since these are the trims for badasses.

My pro rolls backward like any regular old vehicle. I just use my e-brake if the incline gets gnarly. This is an M/T.

I could see HSA interfere if trying to rock the truck back and forth to get unstuck, or gain momentum.

    Like, so many.
Mine works, but I “engage” it by pushing the brake down harder than normal.

My 18 AT OR works perfect in that department, no slippage at all on any incline
