Hill Start assist

That would make sense to me. Why would you need it on an auto when you have your left foot? Yet people with autos are claiming to have it and the brochure states it's an Auto only feature.

 

Here is an excerpt from the Tacoma Owner's Manual:

■ Operating conditions of hill-start assist control
When the following four conditions are met, the hill-start assist control will
operate:
● The shift lever is in a position other than P or N (when starting off forward/
backward on an upward incline).
● The vehicle is stopped.
● The accelerator pedal is not depressed.
● The parking brake is not engaged.

■ Automatic system cancelation of hill-start assist control
The hill-start assist control will turn off in any of the following situations:
● The shift lever is moved to P or N.
● The accelerator pedal is depressed.
● The parking brake is engaged.
● Approximately 2 seconds elapse after the brake pedal is released.

Sure looks like it is on the auto tranny, unless the manual tranny has a "P" selection.
However, the documentation further states, "If so equipped". So, lets take a look at the Tacoma e_brochure:

Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) 27 (automatic transmission only) S S S S S S S S S
Hmmm. Looks like HAC is Standard (S) on all SR5 models with automatic trans.

If you hit the gas or brake, that disables the HAC ... maybe that is why some Auto Trans folks do not notice the HAC.

 

I drive a hill every day that causes it to work on my manual (7300 miles). I think its always been on the manuals. The instructions were right on the visor

Yeah I'm trying to figure out what conditions it needs to meet before it works on mine. Some it works and some it doesn't .
I've read the Manual insert but I think it has more to do with the sequence and percentage of slope.
Don't be discouraged I think you just haven't hit the right "combo" yet (hopefully any way). Or maybe it's a yaw sensor input and an easy fix. But you would think a faulty yaw sensor would trip a code, since that's also tied into the crash safety system.

I have an auto and really only have an issue on steep hills. My driveway is about a 20-25% incline and it will not hold. Makes all kind of racket as it rolls back. I've never had an automatic transmission that would roll back while in drive.

 

mine will hold on any incline i've put it on so far.

 

I have a 6mt dcsb offroad with tech package and have no hill start assist. I have tried it on various slopes.
Also I don't see any information about it on the visors.
Maybe its only for sport packages

DCSB Sport MT here, works on my driveway every time (down hill) which is where it first surprised me, as I'm used to rolling on to the street with my other rigs. Handy on the steep up hill after I cross the river into town. Similar to an Subaru we had 20 years ago

DCSB Off Road MT, nothing indicated on my visor card about HAC. I've tried up to about a 15 degree grade and nothing. Do all you guys who have HAC have instructions on the visor card?

 

My old Rangers would roll back until you stepped on the gas. They were pretty old however so it didn't surprise me. I never tested how far I'd let it go however and usually was on the gas within a few feet.

 

... um so is Hill Start Assist supposed to work automatically and hold you firmly in place for 2 seconds or is it supposed to allow the vehicle to slowly creep backwards and make noises?

I see reports of both in this thread, and i am trying to understand the "expected behavior" for an Automatic transmission in Drive on a hill when the foot is taken off the brake pedal.

Is it just related to pressing the brake pedal firmly down to activate it prior to lifting your foot off the brake?

Maybe i need to start a poll to better visualize peoples experiences with this feature...
