@b_r_o what area in the NW do you live? I’m in Vancouver and have been looking for people to hike with. Sadly I’ve been working 60hr weeks most of the year and only got out a few times. Did 13 miles cold turkey on Mt hood in June!

Hyas Lake , 10 miles rt. The snow was coming down just as we were leaving, probably the last time anyone will hike to this lake until next spring.

My free time has been destroyed by a recent class and training over the last two months. I didn't take any photos of last night's overnight training, but someone snapped this one of me and I thought it looked pretty cool. Complete with bald spot and mask strap over the back of my head.

This is sunrise right above Seven Falls in Bear Canyon (Tucson, AZ area).

I got up into Mt. Lemmon today - the highest peak above Tucson, AZ. It was quite cold but worth the time.

If you make it up to WA I can give you the local tour.

Summer is the easiest access with no snow and good weather.. but the popular areas can be crowded as hell. Winter is super pretty if you have the right gear to get around on foot.

Late spring or late fall would give you a little bit of both winter/summer vibes.. and smaller crowds.

I need to make a thread about planning, but am not sure if it should go in Outdoors or Offroad Trails.

Same for Pima County (Tucson). If COVID is less an issue when you visit, I'll show you the best of the area.

And if you don't plan it well, I'll see you anyway with the rest of the mountain rescue team!

I went up to Cardiac Gap today which is on the Esperero Trail in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, AZ. The trail goes far up into the Catalinas, but it is closed past the gap because of this summer's Bighorn fire. I hadn't been up here since April, so it was nice to see things again.

Here's the view from the gap toward Mt. Wrightson. My labels are a bit off here. Weigles Butte is more commonly referred to as Wiggle Butt. Mount Wrightson looks over Madera Canyon and is one of the prettiest places to hike in all of Southern Arizona.
    1607360299914.jpg

There's got to be water there somewhere, right?
    20201207_095237.jpg

I found this little rock right off the trail. On the back it has a name and a short eulogy. I wonder if this survived the fire or if it was placed here recently.
    20201207_094915.jpg

I thought this looked cool. It's hard to get the lighting right when you don't understand photography.
    20201207_083652_corrected.jpg

This is affectoinately known as the "pig pit" because a javelina fell down here once and couldn't get out. It has some barbed wire around it. I believe it was originally a mine enterance.
    20201207_110920.jpg

    See? Plenty of javelina around.

I haven't done any distance hikes with the kid since the snow showed up, lately we've just been hanging out next to rivers and building a fire. Low elevation when I don't want to deal with snow..

    20201207_185247.jpg

Today we drove up the Middle Fork Snoqualmie road to the Dingford Creek gate. No epic views, just a straight shot back into the central Cascades. Didn't feel like going up higher where the snow is. Follows an old railroad grade that used go over Dutch Miller Gap

    20201207_190202.jpg

Its just a means to get far enough back in the woods so my dog can run around without getting into trouble

I'll do some hiking if the opportunity comes up.. but usually around this time of the year snowboarding starts taking over. Most of the trails are covered anyway

At least rattlesnakes make noise. Running across a foot-long giant desert centipede really freaks me out. Nothing is really going to chase you except the javelina. Bears and mountain lions are very sparse.

Was really countin’ on headin’ out briefly on Sunday but Today is supposed to be record breakin’ warm temps so that’s the end of that. Where I was goin’ is impassable unless frozen. :(

Been in some basement or sub basement crawl spaces with Critter like that, Lol. No need to go far for those.

Went back up the Dutch Miller Gap road/trail again. This time we walked all the way to the old trailhead/horse camp, about 18 miles round trip

Nice clear day, got some sun up high on the ridge but down in the valley was cold, frozen and dark.

I'm envious. Those photos are wonderful. I need to get out more. We were doing some training this evening up by the side of the road that climbs Mt. Lemmon and I took a few pictures. I'm intentionally not including any photos of the people. Cheating warning: no hiking involved, just hiking boots.
