Good afternoon all. I have a 2000 Taco that Ive owned for years. Im having some engine problems is the current 3.4. Was wondering how difficult it would be to swap it with a Hilux diesel? thanks

That depends on your electrical and fab skills. Can’t depend on online response. That’s something you should know personally if you’re up for the task or not. None of us know your skill level.
It’s not like you’re doing a standard oil change, there’s lots of work involved, custom fab and wiring etc.

One person skill will be more enhanced than another.

Do you already have the Hilux motor, or have a source for one? I'd be more interested in the 1UZ (4.0L V8 gas) motor as a swap. Much more readily available, and actually lighter than the 5VZ even.

Red_03 thanks for the input. Im considering a small diesel because of the torque and great fuel economy. I drive diesel hiluxs in kenya quite often. This Taco is CONUS. I have live close to Nashville TN and have got a contact with 4 right now. Seems like getting the engine would be the easy part. Just wondering how much fab would have to be done.

Diesel Toys in San Antonio does all kinds of Tacoma conversions to Toyota D4D engines. Take a look at their website.
    https://www.dieseltoys.com/

IIRC, a conversion less engine used to be in the $20k range, to give an idea of the amount of fabricating needed. They used to sell engines and full conversion kits for those who wanted to DIY, but I think no longer offer that, I believe.
