Look up Audi R15 TDI. The other race cars can't keep up. Bunch of diesel haters. Prob got you butt whooped buy a few of them at the light. Ya it would suck to almost get 30 mpg. The only reason they raised the price of diesel is to keep people from wanting them and buying them.

Why...go buy a Nissan Frontier... looks the same

I agree 100% I don't get the hype over the Hilux... I see about 30 a day over here... I was also issued one to drive here on base and they are still ugly as fuck, loud as hell, and ride like shit. The new Hilux looks like a cross between the Frontier and Ridgeline...

The increase in the price of diesel fuel coincided with the increased regualtions regarding the emissions standards of diesel fuel. Diesel is FAR cleaner than it used to be, and the extra work to bring it up to standard cost money- and that cost has been passed on to the consumer.

The price has absolutely nothing to do with discouraging people from buying diesel engine vehicles, and any assertion of such is ridiculous.

Believe it or not, fuel economy is not that high on the list of priorities for the US consumer. The 1.6 million full-size picks sold in the US last year should be a clear indicator. The reason Toyota invests in hybrid powertrains is because of looming CAFE standards and the PR appeal of hybrids to politicians (and the rebates / grants that accompany them). The US government frowns upon diesels, so Toyota doesn't develop them, simple as that. A diesel Tacoma would probably be saddled with all the diesel exhaust fluid bullshit afflicting the HD trucks.

I would buy a diesel Hilux in a second if it wasn't full of emissions bullshit.

Gas engines don't like water as much as diesels do and the Hilux is far superior to a Tacoma in just about every way (the guys who drive street trucks won't agree) and I could really care less about looks. Function > form for me.

I've considored trading my Tacoma for an earlier Hilux. We're allowed to import ones 15 years old here, so 1996. Lots of interesting older JDM vehicles on the roads here. Want the 3.0L 1KZ, 5spd and Solid axle if I do ever buy one.

I saw a right hand drive Hilux Surf down here in Portland a couple weeks ago. Had BC plates. I wish I could've gotten a picture. :(

I did buy a diesel. I own a Diesel Jetta and a Diesel Ram 2500 4x4. And as much as I love both of them. If anyone every started making an affordable small to medium size 4x4 with a dependable diesel that I could buy in the USA, I would buy the small diesel pickup tomorrow.

you believe everything you read on the web? :D

 Their transmissions are nothing like each other. Marlin Crawl boxes utilize ideas that are on OE Hilux's.

Oh...you need to do some more research overseas then. Their aftermarket stuff is made to beat and readily available while most Tacoma stuff is either:
    A) built by one man show fab shops you have to wait a year to get parts from.
    B) Bull bars and other crap that can't handle a true beating.

If it weren't for small fab companies we wouldn't have shit for our trucks.

Full size is not a small/midsized truck. Why doesn't anyone understand the benefits of being able to take quad trails and go where other trucks can't? If I wanted a truck that weighted more then 2 Tacomas and couldn't go 1/2 the places of one I would buy a 2500 and be on the side of the road right now.

Lo and behold the Hilux looks uglier with a high-clearance bumper:
